Fantastic music and animation, a fantasy Beatles delight!
This new 2012 DVD release of Yellow Submarine is advertised as having been lovingly restored frame by frame to ensure the best picture quality since it was first shown in theaters so many years ago. As for the movie itself, if you're a Beatles or animation fan (or hopefully both) and have never seen this film then you owe it to yourself to do so. The Peter Max-esque artwork is spectacular fantasy fun, the script is highly amusing, and the Beatles music chosen for the film sounds as good today as when it was new. Though the Beatles had little to do directly with the film and their voices are impersonated till the live footage of them singing recorded for the end of the film their sensibilities are all over this project and they did compose three new (at the time) songs for the film, all of them terrific. I can't recommend this movie enough and it's very "family friendly" if you are looking for something fantastic to enthrall your children and introduce them to the music of the Beatles...

If the new DVD is as good as the big-screen version, then it should be really great!
Although I own both the 1988 ] and the 1999 DVD version of , I finally saw the film on the big screen in Fairfax, VA, for the first time today, and it was fantastic! The print was the best I have ever seen, and it is brand-new, not a reissue of the 1999 version. The soundtrack was excellent as well; though some of The Beatles' songs had strange-sounding mixes, that was probably the fault of the theater sound system. I am really looking forward to receiving the new DVD in June. I will add to this review after I have a chance to watch the new DVD. Stay tuned...

MAYOR SUBMARINE EXPLOSIONS BLUE MEANIES!
"Yellow Submarine" is one of those movies that, for me, is pure nostalgia. It was my first introduction to the Beatles, and one of the first non-Disney animated movies I saw.Even though it makes absolutely no sense, "Yellow Submarine" is still a delightfully weird, acid-tripping story that bounces all over a colorful galaxy of hallucinatory nonsense. And yes, it stars the Beatles as heroes riding around in a Yellow Submarine, seeking to defeat the Blue Meanies. No joke.Under the sea, there is an idyllic land known as Pepperland, where music rules. But then the music-hating Blue Meanies invade, petrifying the people with green apples and sealing away St. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Fortunately Old Fred the sailor manages to escape in a yellow submarine, to find help.He finds it in Liverpool, where he enlists the depressed Ringo, and subsequently Ringo's four buddies John, Paul and George. So the yellow submarine sets out to Pepperland, but...

The Beatles' classic 1968 animated feature film, Yellow Submarine, has been digitally restored for DVD and Blu-ray release. The film's songtrack album CD is also being re-issued.

Currently out of print, the film has been restored in 4K digital resolution for the first time by Paul Rutan Jr. and his team of specialists at Triage Motion Picture Services and Eque Inc. Due to the delicate nature of the hand-drawn original artwork, no automated software was used in the digital clean-up of the film's restored photochemical elements. This was all done by hand, frame by frame.

Bonus features for the Yellow Submarine DVD and Blu-ray include a short making-of documentary titled "Mod Odyssey (TRT: 7:30), the film's original theatrical trailer, audio commentary by producer John Coates and art director Heinz Edelmann, several brief interview clips with others involved with the film, storyboard sequences, 29 original pencil drawings and 30 behind-the-scenes photos. Both Digipak packages will include reproductions of animation cels from the film, collectible stickers, and a 16-page booklet with a new essay by Yellow Submarine aficionado John Lasseter (Chief Creative Officer, Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios).

Directed by George Dunning, and written by Lee Minoff, Al Brodax, Jack Mendelsohn and Erich Segal, Yellow Submarine began its voyage to the screen when Brodax, who had previously produced nearly 40 episodes of ABC's animated Beatles TV series, approached The Beatles' manager Brian Epstein with a unique vision for a full-length animated feature.

Yellow Submarine, based upon a song by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, is a fantastic tale brimming with peace, love, and hope, propelled by Beatles songs, including "Eleanor Rigby, "When I'm Sixty-Four, "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, "All You Need Is Love, and "It's All Too Much. When the film debuted in 1968, it was instantly recognized as a landmark achievement, revolutionizing a genre by integrating the freestyle approach of the era with innovative animation techniques.

Masterful restoration of 60's Classic
After reading the New York Times article about the restoration process for Yellow Submarine, I had high hopes for this DVD. I was not disappointed. The color saturation is sumptuous. There are some imperfections, but on the whole this is a first class restoration. If you want appreciate the restoration, look at the original theatrical trailer or the "making of" documentary extras. The re-mastered audio brings new complexity and detail to familiar Beatle material (even on my strictly middlebrow home entertainment system). The opening a cappella chorus of "Nowhere Man" sounded like it was recorded yesterday. For a generation that has not seen this film, Yellow Submarine is a perfect time capsule for 60's psychedelic era. The film begins in under the sea in Pepperland, an idyllic musical community, which is attacked by the music-hating Blue Meanies. "Young Fred" manages to escape the attack in the Yellow Submarine, which takes him to England. He recruits the Beatles...

Campy fun from The Beatles
You're browsing the video rental racks, and there it is: a blue background with yellow lettering and a trippy submarine (yellow at that) on the cover. The movie? THE BEATLES: YELLOW SUBMARINE. Having only seen this movie (well, and MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR, which you probably haven't seen, and there's a reason for that....) of The Beatles I cannot compare it to the other 3 (HARD DAY'S NIGHT, HELP!, and LET IT BE). So I can only operate in this sphere of knowledge.YELLOW SUBMARINE, simply put, is one weird movie. They take elements of The Beatles mythology and throw it all together and end up with a place called Pepperland which, for some strange reason (I don't think the film says why, though I may be wrong) is being invaded by Blue Meanies. Oh yes...... The Blue Meanies want to make everything blue. It has the very hippy or 1960s message of love and music will save the day, which is what happens. Through the way we get several visually dynamic (and altogether strange) music...

This restored, animated valentine to the Beatles offers viewers the rare chance to see a work that's been substantially improved by its technical facelift, not just supersized with extra footage. Recognizing that its song-studded soundtrack alone makes Yellow Submarine a video annuity, United Artists has lavished a frame-by-frame refurbishment of the original feature, while replacing its original monaural audio tracks with a meticulously reconstructed stereo mix that actually refines legendary original album versions.

What emerges is a vivid time capsule of the late '60s and a minor milestone in animation. The music represents the quartet's zenith--Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The story line, cobbled together by producer Al Brodax and a committee of writers, is a broad, feather-light allegory set in idyllic Pepperland, where the gentle citizens are threatened by the nasty, music-hating Blue Meanies and their surreal arsenal of henchmen, with the Beatles enlisted to thwart the bad guys. Visually, designer Heinz Edelmann mixes the biomorphic squiggles, day-glo palette, and Beardsley-esque portraits of Peter Max with rotoscoped still photographs and film; Edelmann's animated collages also nod to Andy Warhol and Magritte in properly psychedelic fashion, which works wonderfully with such terrific songs.

High orthodox Beatlemaniacs can still grouse that the animated Fab Four are (literally) flat archetypes, but that's missing the sheer bloom of the music or the giddy, campy fun of the visuals. The music is worth the price of admission
Just a short review on the remastered DVD. The animation jumps of the screen with all the new post production work they have done rematering the movie. But what really makes this a great buy is the music. Hearing the Beatles in the rematered multichannel format is nothing short of stunning. I sat in between my home theater speakers in awe. The Beatles were masters of making colorful layered music and this DVD makes it so you can almost see the music. Along with George Martin's surprisingly nuanced score, the music alone in this DVD is worth the price of admission.

The Beatles were masters of making colorful layered music and this DVD makes it so you can almost see the music. Along with George Martin's surprisingly nuanced score, the music alone in this DVD is worth the price of admission.

Yellow Submarine...Revisited & Remastered
As to avoid any confusion, this review is specifically for the remastered version of "Yellow Submarine" since many past reviews are appearing here.I began my quest to obtain all of the Beatles' remastered CD's with this one per my son's request; he loves the movie as well the music, so this one was an obvious choice for him!With all of the hype surrounding the release of the remasters, I went into it with a lot of expectations, & after hearing the opening of the title track, my wife & I were believers immediately; our collective "WOW!" reaction was all it took!The difference between this & the original 1990 CD issue is literally like night & day; the sound is greatly improved & the clarity is incredible. Of course, the technology to achieve this was not there in 1990, so for what it was, it was good; but this is astounding!If the band tracks are not enough to convince you, listen to George Martin's orchestral score beginning with...

Just a soundtrack... to the greatest cartoon ever!
Makes me laugh when I read bad reviews about any Beatles album.Although the original Soundtrack to "Yellow Submarine" may not rank at the top of my fave Beatles albums list, it is more representative of the original movie than the more recent re-release that came out with the DVD release.True, the title track and "All You Need Is Love" WERE previously available on other albums. But the four new tracks were fantastic additions to The Beatles' catalog.... with the exception of MAYBE Paul's silly "Altogether Now". But, as the official review stated, "Beatles throw-aways are any other band's greatest hits!" (paraphrased).George gets to shine on the Yellow Sub soundtrack. "Only A Northern Song" has a similar melody line and structure as his song from two years prior, "If I Needed Someone", but with a much more psychadelic flavor. Within each CD's new packaging, booklets include detailed historical notes along with informative recording notes. For a limited period, each CD will also be embedded with a brief documentary film about the album. The newly produced mini-documentaries on the making of each album, directed by Bob Smeaton, are included as QuickTime files on each album. The most dashed-off of the Beatles' records, Yellow Submarine doesn't have much to it: the goofy title track and "All You Need Is Love" are reprised from earlier discs, George Martin's trifle of a score to the animated Submarine feature takes up the second half, and that leaves just four relatively insubstantial new tracks. The Beatles' throwaways are anyone else's classics, though: "Hey Bulldog," the last song Lennon and McCartney wrote in full collaboration, has the instinctive urgency of their best work, Paul's singalong "All Together Now" is awfully cute, and more than one band has dedicated its career to trying to replicate what George's guitars are doing on his dazed, pulsing "It's All Too Much." --Douglas Wolk Top to learn more

A Short Clarification
The 1999 Yellow Submarine Songtrack is not the 1969, 1990, 2009 Yellow Submarine Soundtrack. Names are similar and confusing. The 1999 reissue is a totally different alternate Yellow Submarine album. It lacks the George Martin Orchestral tracks but adds in a number of then popular Beatles songs, some associated with the film, to make a sort of greatest hits album. Remember the "Yellow Submarine (1969)" film story is also "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)" too and is "continued" series of songs from that album. The 1999 track listing is virtually totally different from the 1990 or 2009 CDs or 1969 LP. Only sharing about 6 songs. Amazon has the reviews all jumbled up and mixed up. I have not compared the actual sound of the CDs yet. Though since 1999 is between 1990 and 2009, the sound might be an intermediate improvement over the ancient LP (at least for the 6 songs.
