A life-changing book for parents of RAD kids
This book is what many parents of RAD kids (children diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder) refer to as "the purple bible". Is it our sole source of guidance? Of COURSE not. In addition to "When Love is Not Enough", we have read Keck and Kupecky's "Adopting the Hurt Child", Cline and Fay's "Parenting with Love and Logic", Claudia Jewett's "Adopting the Older Child" and find wisdom in each. That being said, it MUST be brought to the attention of everyone who parents a child dx'd with RAD that Nancy Thomas' guide is the most practical and helpful guide available. In only 4 months, our lives with our adopted 13 year-old daughter (she came to live with us at age 11 and was diagonosed with RAD only 4 months ago) have changed radically. There is laughter and joy in our home again and she is making progress - she is HEALING.To be sure, there have been hurdles to applying Ms. Thomas' methods, chiefly the fact that both my husband and I have careers and...

Very helpful, practical advise
This was one of the books on our reading list prior to pursuing adoption of an older child (we spent about 2 years researching common disorders, therapies, adoption parenting techniques etc prior to adopting). We found it a little scary (the author describes very severe RAD cases) but found the advice very helpful in asking questions about the various children we considered and for then parenting the child we have adopted. As with any book, the authors advice needs to be taken with a grain of salt and adapted to suit your own family realities. For example, the author suggests that the mother must be at home full time and provide all the dicsipline/rewards at first. This was impossible in our situation and we felt that our son needed healthy interaction with both parents as a united team. She also places a high value on the role of sweets as comfort/nurturing rewrdas - but we are a family that does not eat sweets nor do we like to encourage the use of sweets. Overall, however, we...

Moving , Eye opening and Inspirational
Moving and inspiring portrayal of Lois Burnham Wilson's struggles through her marriage to Bill, who suffers from alcoholism. Her undying faith in God and Bill are amazing to see on the screen. The strength that both Lois and Bill had to reach recovery for themselves was amazing. Then to go on and bring hope, inspiration, relief and grace to other's who have suffered and are suffering with the addiction to alcohol or is a family member of someone with this addiction is truly inspiring. Faith in God and a gift to the world from God to see how Bill and Lois transformed their personal hell into charity towards the neighbor is beyond inspiring. When The AA Big Book Is Not Enough
This movie depicts an accurate history of how the program of Alcoholics Anonymous began and the emotional pain and unrest Bill Wilson's wife, Lois, faced living with an intelligent and successful businessman whose career was damaged by his alcohol dependence. I have always been impressed with Hallmark's ability to present life past and present with tenderness and reality in its movies. I am a substance abuse counselor who uses this excellent depiction of the disease concept of addiction, the dysfunctional family unit and codependent behaviors, and the hope for a better life once addicted individuals reach a powerless and unmanageable bottom and become willing to make a powerful and spiritual change in their lives and the way family members can better understand addiction and its damaging effect on families in order for the family to begin its own healing process through Al-Anon started by Lois Wilson. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who desires increased awareness to how...

Product Description

Lois Wilson was a woman of great inner strength and determination. Together, Lois and Bill Wilson started movements that have helped millions of people around the world. And together, they've given us an inspiring love story.

Lois met and fell in love with Bill Wilson. When Bill returned from World War I, they married. Despite concerns over Bill's drinking, Lois believed he was destined for greatness. Soon he was working on Wall Street and they were living a luxurious lifestyle. But Bill's drinking spiraled out of control and soon his job, their home, even their dreams were gone.

Despite repeated disappointments, Lois continued to believe her love and support would eventually persuade Bill to quit drinking. When Bill finally attained sobriety, he poured his time and energy into helping other drunks, which led to the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous. Lois felt resentment that her patience and devotion were not acknowledged. When she discovered the wives of other alcoholics experienced the same anger and frustration, Lois learned her own experience as the wife of a drunk could be invaluable in helping families of other problem drinkers. This was the beginning of Al-Anon.

The DVD also includes the making of "When Love Is Not Enough: The Lois Wilson Story," conversations, credits and production stories, and biographies. Top to learn more

Great acting in a tough story
This movie offers some great acting by Winona Ryder and Barry Pepper. Winona finally again in widely-seen starring role - even if "only" a TV-movie. Barry Pepper getting all the various degrees of "drunk" splendidly while Winona gives an at times wonderful heartwrenching performance - some scenes her best since Girl, Interrupted - hope she gets some Emmy kudos. The DVD plays fine on european "code-free" DVD players and computers switched to Code 1 - gladly no RCE.

Shattering, lovely, painful, hopeful tale
When I ran across this book and saw it was part of the Bittersweet Dreams title, and that the main character had committed suicide, of course I knew this would not be the happily ever type of book. And, to be honest, I had to wonder how Mr. Kelly would be able to make this anything but a depressing autopsy, or a couldawouldashoulda melodramatic weeper. I have read a couple to the Bittersweet Titles before and loved them (including "The Night Porter" by Sue Brown), but how do you make suicide...palatable?This is a very personal subject. I have known two people in the course of my life that have committed suicide and loved both, one like a brother and one like a lover. Both losses devastated me. It is so hard on those left behind, as we struggle to understand the why and the how do we go on and the anger and the grief and try to remember the love. So, I picked up this title with some little trepidation, and started. And got hooked immediately in this...

Thought Provoking
I just finished reading this book and felt the need to share my opinion. One of the most compelling stories I've read recently.First, there are 30 chapters plus an epilogue and about 7800 locations. Worth the price in that regard. But you also get your money's worth for the story as well. Seeing as how it is described in the story blurb I don't think I'm spoiling anything when I say this story involves suicide. Jimmy/Jamie basically lives a double life. There's his Matt world when he lives with his mom and chooses to live a closeted life like Matt mostly for his mom's benefit. Then there's his Darian world when he visits his dad where he lives an openly gay life. Darian knows all about Matt, but Jamie never tells Matt about Darian at all. We learn why from Jamie's journal entries. The story is told from three different perspectives/ways. The story starts out in present day with Matt and Darian's inner thoughts. From there were are taken back into the...

When Love is Not Enough
Philosopher Immanuel Kant stated: "By a lie, a man... annihilates his dignity as a man." Jimmy of 'When Love is not Enough' by Wade Kelly learns a tragic lesson in being untruthful.Jimmy begins to lie to his best friend, Matt, when he doesn't confide in him about his new friend, Darian. His honesty with Matt is the last link between all he is and all he hopes to be. When he severs that tie, he begins to lose his self respect. His fear of being inferior overwhelms him and, as we know, if you don't believe in yourself, nothing else matters. Jimmy didn't believe in himself and all of the good things in his life became irrelevant. In that moment of despair, he convinces himself that ending his life is the only way to stop the excruciating pain that engulfs him.At first I wasn't impressed with Matt's promiscuity and cocky attitude, but after a while, I actually began to feel sorry for him. Anonymous sex is Matt's way of dealing with his sexuality while preserving...

Highly Recommended
Although I know the story of Lois Wilson, Mr Borchert's writing style and intimate knowledge of the Wilson's taught me so much more. The style is easy to read yet sophisticated- for example, when I neared the end, although I know her story and the ending, I stayed up very late one night because it's one of those books you just can't put down until you are done! That's all about the writer's style. The other big plus is Mr. Borchert's many year friendship with Lois and Bill- he knew details that just couldn't be known by looking in archival materials. This gave me new insights into Lois starting Al-Anon Family Groups and how she came to see her illness- I could identify.thanks for writing this book, so many people just don't get it that Lois Wilson herself was a woman destined for greatness and it took God putting these two together, because without Lois, Bill would've perished long before he started AA. Thanks!!!

Awesome
I identified, I re-felt the pain, I laughed, I cried and felt overwheling gratitude for the lives of Lois and Bill as the writer took me through the unfolding of their lives as the wonderful gift of AA and then Al-Anon emerged. What a gift! Suburbly written.Anyone, be they a friend, loved one or suffering alcoholic, whose life has been affected by the cunning, baffling, powerful family dis-ease of alcoholism can find hope when reading this book.

Product Description

Acclaimed author and screenwriter William G. Borchert explores the life and times of Lois Burnham Wilson, the spirited creator of Al-Anon and wife of Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson. From her privileged childhood in turn-of-the-century New York City to her socialite status as the 'Wall Street Wife' of the charismatic Bill in the roaring '20s to the couple's audacious crosscountry motorcycle excursions in the 1930s, Lois was every bit the adventure-seeker. But nothing could have prepared her for the chaos, anguish, and loss caused by Bill's seventeen-year descent into the depths of alcoholism.

In this moving story, Borchert reveals how the couple rose from a life of despair to institute one of the twentieth century's most important social movements, and how Lois created a legacy of hope for millions of families devastated by addiction through her uncommon love and unshakable faith.

Borchert drew from a series of exclusive personal interviews with Lois Wilson to write this definitive biography.

"Bill Borchert came into my life during our astounding screen collaboration in My Name is Bill W. What a joy to revisit this friendship in his new achievement, The Lois Wilson Story. Bill Borchert will always be a seminal part of my life and now millions of others will get to appreciate his selfless devotion to the woman who founded Al-Anon and her mesmerizing story. Bravo, my friend."
Emmy A ward-winning actor (My Name is Bill W.) James Woods

"Bill Borchert shares the intimate recollections of Lois Wilson in an authentic and powerful tale of helplessness, hope, and fulfillment. This view of Lois' life with Bill Wilson and the birth and nurturing of the Twelve Step movement is awesome and rewarding. It is a page-turning read and a tribute to Lois, cofounder of Al-Anon, and her passion to bring healing to everyone affected by the family disease of alcoholism."

Great Movie
I loved all of this movie; however, I particularly like the part where Bill W and his wife are attending a group where Bill is not known and everyone is quoting him. You see the look in his eyes, the desire to say I'm the Bill W you all are talking about, he looks at his wife she gives him a knowing look and he turns away from the people talking about how great he is to work one on one with new man. This is indeed what the program is about. I would also recommend the book an Encounter With A Prophet to see what all of the God stuff is about.

The "ROOTS" of "Alcoholics Anonymous"
Are you an alocoholic? Is someone you love an alcoholic? It really doesn't matter. This movie, regrettably is available only on VHS, will give you insight, understanding, and hope. Hope, that most fragile of words, is the basis of this incredible made-for-TV motion picture.Bill Wilson comes home from World War I a hero. He then conquers Wall Street. He marries the love of his life, Lois. He then discovers both a new god, a new lover, a new idol; the bottle. This unflinching film looks at the descent of of alcoholic into hell, and his journey back, guided, not by the spirit of Virgil, but by another alcoholic, Doctor Bob. Together, they find a "cure" for an "incurable" disease. The disease of alcoholism.Neither could cure themselves, but together, they could find the way out of hell into if not paradise, at least life; life on life's terms. This film has been called the AA "Roots." I won't take up that guantlet. This film stands alone. The...

Wonderful Movie on The Birth of A. A.
As a recovering alcoholic myself, I find this movie an accurate and moving portrayal on the life of Bill Wilson and the early history of Alcoholics Anonymous. James Woods is always a marvelous actor, but here he delivers a tour de force performance as Bill Wilson. Also in the cast is the ever-delightful JoBeth Williams of Big Chill fame. James Garner plays Dr. Bob Smith, who, along with Bill, founded A. A. in 1935. Garner also co-produced the project. This was originally aired on television as a Hallmark Hall Of Fame movie in 1989. Very inspiring!

Product Description

Bill Wilson appeared to have it all - a promising career, a loving wife, and good friends to share a few drinks with after work. Sometimes he drank too much, but he assured his wife Lois he could handle it. Then came the Depression and a dizzying downward spiral into a state of almost perpetual drunkenness.

Finally, in 1935, while trying to stay sober - but desperate for a drink - Bill was put in touch with Dr. Bob Smith, a barely-functioning surgeon who was also leading a nightmarish life of alcohol dependence. That meeting was Bill's turning point. By sharing experiences, by mutual support without judgment, the two men learned to maintain sobriety. They became, in Dr. Bob's words, "buddies on the stormy sea of booze," and their "shaky little fellowship" has developed into what's often called the most successful self-help movement in history - Alcoholics Anonymous.

The DVD also including the making of "My Name Is Bill W." and production story. Top to learn more

Where Can I buy When Love Is Not Enough

In his last Christmas letter to me, he wrote that within the last year particularly he seemed to have lost his “zest for life,” but he went on to muse that is was perhaps an expected outcome of the last quarter of life. After class one day, we walked down Iowa Street in Iowa City, Iowa, and rarely missed a day after that walking home together. I enjoy reading your editorials (don't always agree with them) but the constant focus on the negativity of life (or at the very least, skirting on the edge of the dredges of life) are really quite depressing. We bought gloves, lost one pair, and so shared the remaining by each wearing one glove and shoving alternating hands in a coat pocket, sometimes his, sometimes mine. Rae: I am sorry for your loss, but really, isn't life depressing enough without being constantly reminded about how sucky things really are. Depression is as black ink on wet paper, begins as a drop and spreads insidiously, and often undetected by those close by. Anxiety is often depression’s companion. It is so hard to grasp that one cannot be "loved" out of addiction. He was a kind, loving and gentle boy. Because however he included his Christmas letter with a chronicle of events and travels throughout the previous year and his looking ahead to the next year, I missed the subtly of his musing. He was a much-loved man. We loved him dearly. "When Love is Not Enough". But love was not enough.

This is the part where we hold love “. The more open–hearted and vulnerable I am to love that enters my world and I remain as if I was an open vessel, it will and can transform me. Love is a transformational force of nature. LOVE IS THE ENERGY THAT FUELS EVERYTHING AND CHANGES EVERYTHING FOR WE ALL ARE LOVE The flip side of not opening up our hearts is closing our hearts and the cause of a closed heart is resentment, bitterness and more pain – and eventually shutting your heart to love even more. I welcome it with a gentle smile, gleaming eyes and know that through every relationship we are only learning to love even more. What often time happens in the relationship, when the fix does not happen fast enough or at all over time, the masculine energy in us starts coming out through nagging, blaming, expecting or a plethora of other things that operate from the negative. Women (the feminine essence of spirit) are very good in seeing the potential in men and believing love will be enough to “fix” their partner. Timing: It may not be the “right” time yet, perfect nonetheless, for in every relationship there is a lesson to be learned for that time in our lives. Love brings about intense joy as well as intense pain. LOVE SIMPLY IS…. TO BE LIVED PASSIONATELY AND ON FIRE FOR ALL HUMANKIND WHILE STAYING IN OUR TRUTH. I choose to be the open vessel when love comes calling. Love Simply Is…. We cannot “fix”.
