Great 2-way radios!
IMPRESSION BASED ON EXPERIENCE: This is my second pair of Motorola 2-Way radios. I have tried other bands like Midland and been very disappointed, but Motorola has never let me down. I needed two extra radios for a fishing trip to Colorado so that my father, my brother, my son and I could stay in touch. I was amazed at how good these radios did in the mountains. At one point I was over three miles away from my father on the other side of a mountain and we could still talk clearly. Now I know 3 miles in not as far as the 23 miles range that is claimed these radios can reach, but if you know anything about how these radios transmit, then you know that for it to transmit clearly through 3 miles of solid mountain is close to a miracle. I have a pair of Midland G-300 Two Way Radios that claim a 10 mild range that cannot even reach 1/2 a mile through forest on straight level ground. I was also impressed with the battery life. Even after a long day of heavy use these units had...

Charging Options
You can charge the MH230 using the Motorola standard charging port (with the included charging adapter), the Drop-in cradle charger (also included), or purchase a mini-USB cable for use with the Mini-USB charging port, especially useful when traveling.

Both NOAA and Environment Canada have transmitters located throughout the United States and Canada, respectively. very satisfied
I've never written a review before - but was motivated to write this one. This is a great product. My fly fishing buddy and i use these in the mountains - and they are great. Very clear. My friend even fell into the river, and after drying out, the radio came back to life.

Does the job on the cheap, but range nowhere near 5 miles advertised.
3.5 stars. I bought these walkies for use on a cruise. The walkies did the job on the ship and I was successfully able to communicate with my friends while on board. There was often static during the calls, and conversations greater than 5 words each way, were difficult to hear. We were able to communicate, because we kept our responses to 1 or 2 word answers. I was able to reach my friends anywhere on the ship, the Carnival Elation. Once I left the ship and went to Ensenada, Mexico, I was unable to reach anyone in my party. I got nowhere near the 5 mile range advertised. Having never used a walkie before, I found the setup and use extremely user friendly. I did not have to replace the battery for the entire length of the cruise (4 days), and I used the walkie multiple times per day. I did turn it off after going to bed. I purchased the pair from Radioshack for $20, and believe that for the money, you can't expect more than you get from this radio...

Entry-level walkie-talkies that are practical and kid-friendly
Motorola makes a whole family of walkie-talkies (or 2-way radios). This set of is the cheapest and smallest available. They are so light and compact that even a kid can handle one of those with ease. But don't let the small size and low cost fool you, they actually work just like the real things - provided you start with the correct expectation...First of all, forget about the advertised range of "up to 10-mile". As in the case with ALL walkie-talkies, the claimed transmission range is the best case under most optimal conditions. Namely: transmitting from one hill top to another with clear line-of-sight, no other RF interferences, weather is perfect, Jupiter aligns with Mars, etc. In real life urban environment, a range of 1-2 miles is more likely. With that in mind, those walkie-talkies are still...

Good Quality, Reasonable Price, Nice Feature Set
These 2 way radios work great over a 1/2 mile radius (our most commonly used range). Apart from the initial 16 hour charge, they work right out of the box (actually one of those pesky clamshells you have to cut open) without having to read the instructions. Each unit comes with a rechargeable battery pack and a removable plastic belt clip, and share a charging base station with 2 slots. If the battery goes flat, you can use 3 regular AA's instead. There's a button to ring your team before talking, and if you don't like the sound, there are 2 more options to choose from. There is also a socket to plug in an optional headset. Motorola is honest enough to prominently display on the package that in urban areas, the 16 mile rating translates into a 1 mile working range. However at this distance, with many buildings only 2 storeys high, and on a channel that transmits full power, I can hear the other set transmit but not well enough to understand what is being said...

Great product!
Exactly what I wanted... I only use these on occasion for car drives where I need to keep a bunch of people gathered and organized en route to another place or just for a drive. The range on these is awesome and the whole time I had to communicate with the other walkie talkie from this set I could hear him perfectly. Other two-ways were on our channel in the group with varying ranges, and my set was by far the best.. For the price you can't beat it.

GREAT, EXACTLY what i wanted!!!
These are exactly what i wanted, the have an awsome range, and i can here everyones voice very clearly! I mainly use these for camping, but they are also good for my sons airsoft wars! I think that it is well wot=rth the $33.00! GET TWO!!! It comes with a rechargable battary, and a stand to plug them into to charge! they have 23 channels, and you can scant to see if anyone ealse is on one of those 23 channels, as long as someone is talking. Great, I strongly recccomend these for communication over ares between 5 ft, and 16 miles!!!! Though like all walkie talkies if they are too close together they make a high pitches buzzing sound(0-4ft)

Seems to work for me
Have not tried them on open terrain, so I can't speak for the 36 mile range, but they worked for about 3 miles with obstructions. Thats better than I expected. I like the fact that they are not too small. I also like the yellow case (easier to find). My favorite feature is the ability to change channels on one unit and the 2nd unit follows. Thats really handy. I was a couple of miles away and there was chatter, so I changed to a higher channel and the other radio followed. You have to study the instruction sheet to figure all this out, but its worth the eduction. Also, get a GMRS license! It was easy and I did it online. The cost of the GMRS license for my family was $85. The waterproof feature is nice, but you have to be careful and make sure the speaker/mic jack cover is secure and it can be a bit tricky. I would NOT start dunking them in water just because it says they are waterproof. They look waterproof, but I don't ever plan on testing that out unless necessary. One...

Even Better Than I Expected!
In the past I have taken walkie talkies to the State Fair and they were unusable because of all the chattering going on. I brought the Midland GXT1000VP4 radios to the fair and randomly selected a channel and privacy setting. They worked perfectly. Not one other person broadcasted on the same channel (200,000 people in attendance). We could hear each other crystal clear. You either get a crystal clear signal or no signal at all with these radios; there is never any static. They lasted the whole day on one charge and the battery indicator still read full. The only complaint that I have is when putting them on the charger, it takes a bit of menuvering to get the charge light to go on...and I have had it go off after about 15 minutes before. In that case I reseated the one radio again and the light stayed on for the whole charging period.

Great radios, BUT
The radios by themselves are good, but be careful to read the fine print. The first time I went to use the radios one of them didn't have a full charge on it. No problem, I just used AA batteries. Then we realized we could barely hear each other through the headphones even with the radios turned to max volume. I thought it might be the headphones, but they were very loud when plugged into a friend's radio made by a different company. Midland blamed it on the headphones anyway, but they were not covered under the warranty. So I didn't use the radios again for a few months until we went on another trip and I made sure to place the radio on the charger a day early this time so it would have ample time to charge. Same problem one radio didn't take but half a charge. I contacted Midland on Friday explaining my situation, they got back to me on Wednesday to say there was probably an issue with the battery pack (No duh). I emailed back around 10:30 am and said I figured that much,...

Don't expect the advertised range
I recently purchased these radios after our 2-year old Motorolas were stolen. We use the radios exclusively for RVing (communicating between driver and spotter when maneuvering). The audio on these radios is MUCH better than the previous Motorolas. Menu functions seem to be a bit more intuitive as well. The only negative I have found is "range", or lack thereof. Midland advertises 36 miles. (Yeah, I know, that's on a straight shot with nothing in between, but how many of us really use them under those conditions!) In the real world we were able to transmit about 1 mile. I knew this limitation going in, so I wasn't disappointed. The radios work well for our purposes.

new purposes for old toys
I should start out by saying that I am a physical therapist working in a skilled nursing facility. I recently had a patient that had a hard time with the nurses bell, so I decided to try these out. I love how easy these are to use - turn the on switch and push the yellow button to talk. The clarity is great (although I have only used these in shorter distances- about 350 feet or less). The battery life has been good as well. And, while I hate to admit it, my little boy got a hold of these and dropped them several times before I got to him with no ill effects on the walkie talkie. NOT the Walkie Talkies I grew up with!
My 5 year old really wanted a set of Walkie Talkies, a friend of ours researched and bought these for there son and raved about them when I asked. My son has had them for 3 months now and loves playing with them. They have very good reception and sounds quality. We live on 3/4 of an acre and he can be inside while dad is outside being 'spied' on. These are SO much better than what I remember walkie talkies being just 20 years ago. (Man I sound old!)

Great toy---lousy bargain
After extensive research online I decided on this particular model for my 5 year old grandkid. About to put it in my cart, I checked the reviews on Amazon and lo and behold: thanks to the reviewer who alerted me to the fact that Toys R Us had it for half the price charged here. I checked their website and found that it was, indeed, available in the TRU store right up the block. I ran right over and found the LAST ONE. Amazon, as the other reviewer stated: shame on you!
