Excellent product
Soy-gel is the best low-toxicity paint stripper I have been able to find. It blows Citristrip away, easily lifting off multiple layers of paint. It also removes difficult-to-remove paints (e.g. milk-based). It comes very close to, and perhaps even equals, the effectiveness of dangerous methylene chloride strippers like Rock Miracle and Easy-Strip.The product stays wet for a long time, increasing itseffectiveness.It does cost more than twice what the very toxic strippers do, but it is worth it for the health benefits. You can leave it working in your house and not worry about being gassed to death while you go about other things.

It's like MAGIC
I have just used this gel to strip a painted brick fireplace. Three layers of paint bubbled off and practically melted away. Just lift the paint off with a scraper (no real effort required) and remove the softened paint from the grout with a wire brush.It is almost completely odourless and I was thrilled to be able to use such a safe and EFFECTIVE product with a two year old around. I've been using Amazon for years but this is the first review I've been moved to write because I just can't get over how good this was.

safe and effective
I bought a quart of this product to make sure it worked before ordering a gallon, as it is not cheap. But if you are unwilling to use toxic strippers, as I am, then it is worth every penny. It is beautifully effective on wood, and the Franmar website states it is safe for plaster. As my husband and I are stripping many layers of (probably) lead-based paint off old lumpy rough plaster, we would never have accomplished the task without this stripper.I have found it is most effective to use a relatively thin layer of gel (even on thick layers of paint) and wait at least one day, maybe two (not covered with plastic film) until the surface is no longer gooey or wet. The paint is now very pliable but dryish and will peel away from the underlying surface in nice strips

Removes Paint From Brick
My boyfriend and I recently bought a house that has a brick fireplace that was painted. We really enjoy the warmth of a fire all winter long and want to put in a wood stove insert. We had a chimney inspector come and among other things flagged the paint on the fireplace as a fire hazard for the wood stove! I couldn't believe it.I have to tell others what worked for us. After the removing process, we learned that there were 5 layers of paint on the fireplace! White, Mint Green, Creamy Yellow, Brown and another new layer of white paint.I selected SoyGel becuase we needed to be in the house while it was working We did a test spot first to see how long we could leave this gel on before it hardened. Well it still hasn't hardened and the longer we leave it on the easier the paint comes off.The first layer wrinkled up and peeled off just like a layer of latex. Looked kind of like Chewed Gum. The next 4 layers were easily removed with a small putty...

This stuff is a different dimension...
First of all, the shipping was quick. And since the USPS was able to ship it overseas to an APO box, it isn't that dangerous.Second, very low odor, no irritation of the skin or lungs - a big difference from methyl chloride, MEK strippers.Third, water soluble. I haven't noticed any drying problems that wouldn't be associated with putting water on wood. And clean up is a dream compared to Zip-Strip, among others. I'd never put the rags in the washer otherwise. (They're clean.)Lastly, it doesn't need continual watching. It stays wet while you have lunch! Seems to "re-activate" easily, should one have to wait overnight. I covered it with Saran wrap (which didn't dissolve) and went right to work in the morning.I tested this on the paint used on refilled natural gas bottles. After ten minutes the paint looked new. After half an hour, the metal was clean. A light sanding and it was ready to paint.I used a wet tooth brush to clean...

Works Great!
I love this product! I am stripping all the wood in my 100+ year old house. I don't need gloves, there is no odor so I can work even in the middle of winter with the house closed up. It is very easy to use. I wouldn't use anything else.

Low oder and it really works
I needed to strip and refinish 6 old stained and varnished doors in a restaurant in 3 days! So I was looking for a product that could be used indoors and onsite and still be safe. I read up on soy gel on the Finishing Store's websight and decided it was my best option. So the first day I lay all the doors on saw horses over tarps and spread the soy gel on. In about 20 minutes I could start to scrape the goo off with a plastic putty knive. It is pretty messy so I scraped it all right into a bucket. I was running low on product and had to try to recycle the gel to finish both sides of the six doors. After I got most of the goo scraped off I used a scotch brite pad and water to get the remainder of the gunk off.It took some work as the gel becomes saturated with the varnish and stain and really starts to lose its ability to strip and it starts to gums up on the pad but I kept rinsing and sometimes scraping the pad off in a bucket of water and eventually got everything...

great for stripping faux wood door
I was looking for a way to remove stain a figerglass front door that has a faux wood exterior. The old stain could not be sanded off due to it not being wood BUT this product took all the stain off. It came off as was described.( I needed multiple applications due to the door being 15yo.)Then I was easily able to stain it with a gel stain. It looks new again. A great find and if used as directed, a wonderful product.

Tried Many Others - Found This Best
I never write reviews for products, but for Citristrip I had to make an exception. I'm renovating my 100 year-old kitchen (which means, odds are, there is a 100 years of paint to be removed) and this product is making the task absolutely easier. I'm applying the Citristrip in a layer about the thickness of a plastic shopping bag, letting it sit for about an hour, and EASILY scrapping it off with a plastic putty knife. Sometimes a second round is needed, particularly in the corners where paint has more heavily accumulated over the years, but it's not a problem. It has not damaged the wood at all. To remove excess residue, I've been using a dish towel and very warm water (cool water makes the residue feel kind of gummy and makes it harder to remove). I am very pleased with the results. The smell isn't too bad - it seems like a mix of orange candy and hair perm chemical (I know, gross, but accurate). Overall, be patient with the Citristrip processing the paint removal, and you...

Outstanding wood stripper
I decided to refinish my floor in the living room. I started out with a varnish remover and sandpaper. After much work and stinking up the house, I finished about 1/3 of the room. I then stupidly applied some stain/polyurithane mix. It did not dry evenly so I had to strip it again. This time, I happened across this citristrip. I found 1liter covered more floor than a gallon of the standard varnish stripper since you could apply this in thin coats (most others you need thick coatings). The smell was very pleasant and did not drive my family to spend time with friends than be home. It took longer to strip but that was a plus because it allowed me to spread it out better. Oh--it took off the polyurathane as well which really surprised me. I need thicker coats but sure enough, it save me many additional hours of work. I wish I had started out with this. Honestly, I think that the 1 liter probably would have done the entire room if I didn't have to deal with the polyurathane...
