Best Server deal I have ever seen on Amazon
Great bargain on an enterprise class server! HP Support and Warranty. It makes an awesome Windows Home Server 2011 (Vail) system as well (saw upd on hp site to support "headless", no keyboard/VGA). Four hotplug drive bays, embedded B110A SATA RAID, but option to use HP's awesome Smart Array P212 RAID. Micro ATX Tower (4U if you rack it). For any upgrade needs, pci Gen 2 slots, a x16, 2 more x8, and another x4. USB2.0 10 total (4 rear, 4 front panel, 2 internal (one for USB Tape connectivity)). HP had driver support for 64-bit OS (W2K8 R2, RHEL, SLES), 32bit W2008, and P212 fully supported, or even W2003, other 32bit OS, but without HP support. Even iLO3, option for Adv License with mobile app (iOS, Android). This is the Quad Core Intel® Xeon® E3-1220 (3.10GHz/4-core/8MB/80W, 1333, HT, Turbo 1/2/3/4) Processor "Sandy Bridge" with up to 16GB RAM.I work with HP servers alot and was very pleased to see this deal, and it's now my new home server!hp com / go /...

Fantastic, quiet server, well designed
I was very pleased with the quality of this inexpensive server. Especially given how crappy HP's consumer desktops and laptops are in comparison. Very quiet (I don't think there is a quieter one out there), works well with vmWare ESXI. To mount your own hard drives need to get 373211-001 HP TRAY FOR 3.5" SATA/SAS DRIVE also available on Amazon for @$18.

Amazing Server!
Purchased this server for a vSphere 5 mini-dev environment and immediately fell in love with it.As a G7 with iLO3 HP has taken the next step to bringing this server into the Proliant fold. The new Support Pack for Proliant SPP)supports this server with Software and Firmware updates just like the traditional Proliant server line. To leverage the iLO3 you'll need the iLO Advanced license to access the graphical console and virtual media features. It runs vSphere5 so well that I have a hard time understanding why it isn't certified or at least supported by the HP ESXi bundle - Granted 16GB RAM ceiling and single processor is a good case to be duty cautious, but for light non-critical virtualization needs - a pair of these, a good iSCSI NFS NAS solution and you'd be set for test/dev or even light back office work. You'll need to also get these if you are going to use off the shelf drives:...

LOVE this rock solid little baby!
This is truly a great little server.I had far too many problems with my previous Windows Home Server (dedicated WHS Acer box with an Atom CPU): skipping videos, remote access issues, and other troubles like no direct VGA port to view what's going on.The set-up was easy, adding RAM and a DVD drive were a total breeze. The new HP box booted up, I installed WHS, and haven't had to think much about it since.I'm currently running with 14Tb (a PCI-E card + (2) 4-bay Sans Digital JBODs) and this box is quiet and runs cooler than the external drive boxes. I've experienced no problems with skipping, and that's with the server also running other processes, like podcatching, u-torrent client, and TiVo trasnfer/recoding.Full disclosure - I work for HP, but in the printer division, so I bought this as a consumer. In all honesty, this server makes me proud to be an HP'er... it's a well-designed, well-made, solid performer.

Great VMWare ZFS NAS Server all in one.
I bought this to use as a NAS / VMWare serverAlso got 8GB ECC memory which is the max this server supports, booting VMWare ESXi off a USB, then running NexentaStor off of a SSD and then running ZFS on in RAID-Z1 (equivalent to RAID-5, I use RAID-Z instead of hardware RAID so I'm protected from the RAID-5 write hole and silent data corruption) across 3x250GB drives (also use part of the SSD is an L2ARC - a cache that keeps the most frequently accessed data on the SSD) which is shared back to VMWare as an NFS share so any other VM's installed on the box can be backed by ZFS redundancy. I did raw device mapping for the three drives so that Nexenta has direct access to them. This means I could easily export and import the pool into another system.I found some instructions to get CrashPlan to run on Nexenta by combining some Linux pieces with the Solaris version of Crashplan and it works very well to backup the entire zpool to a remote offsite location. It was a...

Great little server!
Bought a previous generation one last year to run as a NAS for work, and I hadn't had to even reboot it in months. So when it came time to buy one for home office, this was a logical choice. The dual-core processor won't win any speed contests, but is more than adequate to run VMware ESXI 5.0. I have it running a real-time firewall/malware gateway software (eSoft's virtual Instagate), and it still has plenty of power left over. Windows Home Server will be going on this thing next!Pros:Built-in RAID 0,1 supportExtra screws and allen wrench included in doorEasy hard drive installation and removalCompact, half-height mini towerSuper quiet. Put in some green hard drives and you won't even know the machine is there.Runs VMware ESXi like a champ. No issues with installation.Cons:Wish it had RAID 5Compactness made it a little difficult to add extra Gigabit Ethernet card. The process requires unfastening...

Not easily impressed... but I am now
Working in the computer industry for over 25 years, I'm not easily impressed. Two quad-core processor, 8 GB of RAM and 2.5 TB of storage in a home pc... nice, but just "more of the same".Most of the computer innovation of the last couple of years has been "more, faster and bigger", but nothing revolutionary. However, the new MediaSmart EX495 is truly amazing: the speed, the capacity, but more importantly: the ease-of-install, and ease-of-use that DON'T "handycap" the "power user", are fabulous.I had the server up and running in a few minutes. It's now supporting 6 users, 1 MediaSmart Connect x280n (why did they stop making that!?), and 1 Roku M500. I added a second 1.5-TB hard drive and have already filled almost half of the total capacity (25,000 songs, 28,000 pictures, 600 videos, and loads of other stuff). This includes doubling almost every directory (I like this feature over Raid 1 as it provides much more flexibility), and backups of all PCs. The most impressive...

Idiot proof...even for an idiot like me
This little guy got delivered by Amazon a few days before it's original release. I am not much of a directions guy, but was extremely pleased with how easy this was to set up and how intuitive it was when it came to setting it up. I've got 1 workstation, 2 netbooks, and 2 laptops that backup wirelessly to this guy. If they are already on the same wireless network, it's simply a matter of clicking the 'add computer' button. There's no need to fuss with any of the backup settings unless you are particular, as it will do the work automatically for you. You can then either access your files via the console or remotely at your convenience.I can't stress enough how nice and convenient it is to be able to centrally access all my files without having to shuffle files back and forth between the local hard drives and having piece of mind knowing it's being backed up automatically. I previously did this with Time Capsule which while it worked at times, was tempermental and slow. I'm...

Useful and solid quality - for the committed user but not for picky people ~ Rev. July 2010
I'm technically inclined, but not an engineer. I have some experience with this topic... I first built my own server with spare parts and run it at my home. I am reviewing this because I bought it for my parents and installed it.Preface - as of 2010, I've seen a lot of heartache about Mac Compatibility. Please, do some research before purchasing this product for a Mac to see if this will fit your needs. There is a TON of outside forum support about this. Otherwise my original review still stands:Part 1: The software, and what HP brings to the party:Windows Home Server is actually a program (based on Windows Server 2003 with enhancements, optimized and pre-configured), and is easy to use in a home. And it is good, all by itself. HP's contributions by adding on its own 'add-ins' make the software better. As a sample of what this means for you, an example: If you are recording tv shows on in Windows 7 media center you can offload...

Best in class!
Bottom line is you are not going to find a better product in this category and none at this price point. This is my third NAS product and all are currently running on my home network. Ultimately the price is what led me to purchase it because I figured it was a small investment even if it were just for experimenting. My other two units are a Netgear Stora (first purchased), a Netgear ReadyNAS (for higher end server) and now this one (intended to replace the Stora because it is an immature piece of garbage). The NSA221 is in the same class as the Netgear Stora and I would say that's the product you should compare with. Right off the bat, the NSA221 clearly has a lower price point and coming diskless allows you to purchase the drives of your choice. In the US, Netgear does not sell the Stora diskless, so minimally you need to take one of their drives. Now, as far as functionality, the NSA221 blows the Stora away in every category.I love the...

Works fine for me. Faster than what others are saying.
I have owned the NSA221 for about one month now. I hesitated at first in purchasing because of the reviews that said the unit was slow. The first thing I did upon unpacking and setting up was to upgrade the firmware to the latest version 4.20. Initial setup was with a single WD20EARS 2TB drive. The user must remember that all components in the network must be gigabit compatible to get the speed over the network. That includes network cards, cabling and router. I am running an SMC Barricade SMCWGBR14-N draft 11N wireless router which incorporates a 4 port gigabit switch. The NSA221 is plugged into one of the four available ports along with the other home PC's. The home PC's all have add-on TRENDnet Gigabit PCI Adapter Cards (TEG-PCITXR) bought at Amazon for $12.50 apiece. They work fine. Remember to run your PC's ROM setup and turn off the internal Network device so there are no conflicts. The home network is fully wired with CAT5E cable. Two weeks after purchasing, I added...

Works as advertised, almost
My only problem with this unit is that the media server does not recognize certain large video files (ie movies in HD). I bought this thing to back up my computers and to stream media to my PS3. It took almost no effort at all to get my pictures and mp3s to appear on my PS3 and my big screen. I have a few large movies (>4 GB) that I saved onto the NAS but would not show up on the PS3 menu or when I connected to the media server through my PC. These files appeared and played fine on the PS3 when connecting directly from PC to PS3, so it must be something internal to the ZyXEL media server. If you are looking for a network storage or a media server here are a few things you should know about this product: - I could never figure out a way for the server to recognize video clips bigger than a one-hour show in 720p. I could save the files to the network drive but would never appear on the media server. If this is what you want to do, you might need to look...

Good power-effecient box, couple quirks
This is good performing, low power consumption box. It is mostly fanless (there is a small fan in the PS), depending on what you're doing with it you may want to install a small fan in it. In one of them, I used a PCI "slot" fan which is OK, but uses up your one slot.Unlike older SuperMicro Atom-based servers, this one does include a PCIe riser card.Issues: There is no way to properly install a 2.5" drive without drilling your own holes. If you're lazy, you can install a 2.5" drive with a single screw and it will mostly stay in place. But this is a strange omission, and why I give it 4 stars. There is room to fit 2 2.5" drives in the case without any special brackets if they'd only put in those screw holes.I've also had problems getting a PCIe audio DSP card to be recognized. Not sure if the card has issues, or the slot is giving me problems.
