Serves its purpose
This lock works well. It is a little heavy, and I could not attach it to my bike anywhere, so I carry it in my pack. The cable makes it much easier to lock my bike to various racks, and makes it so I can lock up my friends bike at the same time. I would buy this again.

It's not bad for medium to low bike crime areas
Kryptonite STD U Lock seems to be a very decent lock but it still can be "infiltrated" by a knowledgeable master thief/master lock picker in probably under 1 hour time. I'm not too worried since it is sizable, hefty looking and very heavy (4 lbs), so it looks bigger than what I saw on other bikes in the bike rack and my bike is only valued at $500. Plus most bike thieves are just simple crooks with a few tools (a bike crook in public with a 20 Pound Sledge Hammer, hacksaw, 42-inch bolt cutters, 12-inch screwdriver, 20-inch crowbar, and claw hammer will be very obvious and suspicious working for one hour on a lock). Most bike thieves have limited time, looking for an "easy" and quick target. If you beef up your security with the bulky Kryptonite STD U Lock, odds are he'll go for a bike with a cheap lock (cheap chain or cable locks are a certain way to get your bike stolen in the bike rack). Many bikes are stolen because they're not even locked ("I'll just be a sec!")...

Good lock, scammy protection offer
I like the lock. It's for a cheap ($100) bike. When I get a more expensive bike I'll buy the New York Std (yellow sleeve) lock.I think the Kryptonite locks are a good value. But, the "protection offer" is almost insulting to my intelligence. You have to read the box carefully to realize you're only getting an *offer*, not protection. You can buy protection for 1-2 years. And, the terms of protection are so ridiculously tedious that you wonder why they even offer. The terms sound like they don't want you to use it.Here's an example: You have to register your keys and serial number of your bike within 15 days. Why a time limit? I bought my lock before receiving my bike. Why should it matter to Kryptonite that I bought the lock 2-3 months ago? Also, you can't transfer the lock/insurance to another bicycle. Why would Kryptonite care about that? Unless it's just a gimmick to sell more locks? For a claim, you have to submit the broken lock. What...

Best lock out there, good for big cities but heavy as a brick
I got my bicycle stolen the second time I locked it up in the city with a cable lock only, so I spent many hours researching locks to make sure it wouldn't happen again. This lock is widely regarded as the most secure lock currently available, and weighs much less than the fahgettaboudit chain locks (which seem to be about equally secure). Mine weighs 4 lbs 6 oz, and to lock the tires I need to also use a 12 oz 4 foot Kryptonite cable lock. So the whole locking system is about 5 lbs, which is a lot.The most important feature of this lock is the small size, which doesn't allow thieves to get their manual tools like levers or car jacks in to break it. The only known way of breaking this lock is to saw it by hand (at least a half hour of intense effort), or to use a powered angle grinder (probably at least 5 minutes). So most thieves would end up cutting through the frame of the bike if they really wanted it.There are other small U locks that are...

Paid for itself, worth every penny
I've been using this lock for over a year now, and it's worth every penny. I live on a college campus in Los Angeles, and park my bike outside at night. My last bike was stolen when a thief cut right through the $30 U-lock I had. After that experience, I bought the Fahgettaboutit to protect my new bike.Sure enough, a few months in, someone attempted to steal my bike while I was at work. The thief failed miserably, managing only to cut through the vinyl sheath on the shackle and scratch the paint on the steel. I think that the thief may have even broken his bolt cutters, because he didn't snip the cable that secured my wheels. The jerk did take the time to unbolt and steal my fork, brakes, handlebars, stem, and shifters, but in saving my frame and wheels this lock paid for itself and then some. After replacing the stolen components, I invested in a Pitlock set to protect my wheels, brakes, and fork. Most of the remaining hex bolts have been filled with solder to...

Big city cyclists need big city protection, as would-be thieves aren't intimidated by just any bicycle lock. Enter the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit U-lock, which features an 18mm hardened Max-Performance steel shackle designed to resist bolt cutters and leverage attacks. Ideal for anyone who lives in moderately high crime areas, the New York Fahgettaboutit boasts a maximum 12 ranking on the Kryptonite 1-12 lock comparison system, which ranks the varying levels of security offered by the company's product range. A lock that ranks 1 on the Kryptonite scale might work if you live in the burbs and have a Rottweiler parked next to your bike or motorcycle. However, city dwellers demand extreme protection, which is why the New York Fahgettaboutit is built for serious deterrent security. The U-lock also offers such security-enhancing features as a high-security disc-style cylinder; an oversized, hardened steel sleeve over the crossbar for double security; double deadbolt locking for extensive holding power; and a center keyway that defends against leverage attacks. And as a bonus, the lock comes with three keys, one of which is lighted with a high-intensity bulb that makes it easy to unlock the Fahgettaboutit after dark. Other features include a protective vinyl coating, a sliding dust cover that protects and extends the cylinder life, and dimensions of 3.25 by 6 inches.

The Legendary Durability of Kryptonite Locks
The first big test for Kryptonite locks came in 1972, when Kryptonite founder Michael Zane directed the Second Avenue Bicycle Shop in New York City to lock a three-speed bicycle to a signpost in Greenwich Village. Although thieves immediately stripped all of the bicycle's removable parts, the bicycle itself remained for 30 days and 30 nights. The Kryptonite lock and the bike frame were still in place, even though the lock had been attacked numerous times. The publicity gave Kryptonite the boost it needed and forever changed the face of bicycle security. Twenty-two years later, Kryptonite returned to the streets of the Big Apple to test its latest innovation, the New York lock. In April 1994, the New York Post laid down the ultimate challenge: Could Kryptonite's New York lock last 48 hours on the toughest streets of New York? In a city where more than 100,000 bikes are stolen each year, Kryptonite and the Post locked a brand new, bright green Univega road bike worth $600 to a parking meter in the East Village--the Bermuda Triangle of New York bicycle thievery. For a full 48 hours, the bike remained locked on the corner of Avenue A and 11th Street. Zane and Neil McDaid, director of product development and design for Kryptonite, watched from around the corner as the bike came under every possible means of assault, stumping thieves at every turn. After 48 hours the bike remained intact except for the gear derailleur, which had been stripped off. The lock showed definite signs of abuse, but it had not failed. The New York lock had met the Post's challenge.

Not satisfied with the length of the test, Zane moved the bike to SoHo for another six days and, finally, uptown near the Lincoln Center. Even in these high-theft areas the properly locked bike lasted another three weeks before being pulled off the streets by Zane and McDaid. The Post also ran the New York lock through a battery of street tests using common bike theft tools: a 4-foot bolt cutter, a crowbar, and a hammer. The non-Kryptonite locks cracked in seconds, but all methods failed on the New York lock, even the monstrous bolt cutter, which was rendered useless with large dents in its jaws.

About Kryptonite
In the early 1970s, Michael Zane was a free-spirited, bearded kid with a VW van and a big idea for a new kind of lock. He traveled thousands of miles showing the unique U-shaped locking device and spreading his passion for bicycle security to bike dealers all around the country and forged lifetime relationships. The company soon expanded its product line to include power sports, hardware, and snow sports security. Through innovative product designs, cutting-edge marketing savvy, legendary customer service, and pure fanaticism for security, Kryptonite grew with a cult-like following. In 2001, the company that was started in a VW van was purchased by industry giant Ingersoll Rand and became a flagship brand in the company's Security Technologies sector. Publications such as Bicycling, Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, US News & World Report, and a host of others continued to tout Kryptonite products as the best on the market. The company's dedication to its customers is best represented by its actions during the fall of 2004, when it was discovered that the industry-standard tubular cylinder could be compromised, at times, with a household item. Kryptonite flew into action, created a voluntary lock exchange program, and replaced more than 400,000 locks in 21 countries for free. In essence, the company redesigned the equivalent of nine years worth of new products in just 10 short months. Kryptonite is the only company in the world that offered such a comprehensive plan to customers, taking its "legendary customer service" pledge to new heights.

Small enough for my back pocket
I bought the Mini U-Lock after using many different locks including a high end Kyrpotonite NYC chain lock. While the chain may offer more protection having a lock that weighs half as much as my bike, and requires a bag to carry it simply is not practical. The Kryptonite Evolution-Mini U-Lock, fits easily in my back jean pocket.90% of the time, when riding in NYC I need a lock to keep my bike safe while I stop at a restaurant to have a cup of coffee or a meal. Usually I can even see my bike, so I need something strong and light. I ride a fixie so I use the U-Lock with a cable through the front wheel. Total weight is very small.Would I trust the Kryptonite Evolution-Mini U-Lock to leave my bike while I went to a movie? Depends on the bike and where it is locked. I have done it. The Mini is not easy to get off, but of course it can be more easily attacked than the Kryptonite New York locks. But all the tests I have read show it is not an easy lock to...

Great, Solid Lock!! Subpar Mounting Bracket.
The Evolution Mini is definitely a great lock. It's small, well built and is one of the highest rated bike locks on the market. It weighs about 2 lbs which isn't bad considering it's high rating of protection. The Evolution Mini can fit in your back pocket but be weary of the "E-Z Mounting Bracket". It's cheap and of questionable quality. Don't be surprised if the mounting bracket snaps in two or swings around when you hit a bump. (I don't use the mounting bracket because it's so crappy.)I like the fact that the Evolution Mini won't let you take the key out without it being properly locked. This feature is actually invaluable. You know for a fact that the lock is indeed locked tight the second you pull out the key. No second guessing or having to tug on the lock to make sure it's fully secured. Very nice.Note: The keyhole can be a bit finicky if you don't insert the key all the way and properly. Just take your time and don't force it or you might break off the...

Great Small lock, not for beach cruisers
I downgraded to this lock from New York Fahgettaboutit Mini (NYF). The inside diameter is about the same size only slightly smaller, but less than half the weight!Main reason for this choice of U Lock was for weight savings, mounting bracket, color, and small size. (it truly does fit anywhere)Weight is almost not an issue no matter how you carry. Backpack, back Pocket, or Bracket are not a problem. The crushing weight of the NYF was unbearable. So hands down this is far nicer to ride around in.I've read many reviews on how hard it is to get the lock out of the supplied bracket. I've been using this ulock daily in the bracket for 2 months. I have it mounted to my seat tube, and yet to experience a problem. It's been mounted so that I have about 3 inches of clearance from the top tube. When lifting the lock upwards it will gently bump into the top tube letting me quickly know the lock is free and ready to be removed. I've never pinched my fingers as...

Use it correctly, and you will be rewarded
Some people have issues with this cable being easily cut, which leads to their bike being stolen. I want to set the record straight about this product and proper locking methods. These cables are by no means meant to be your sole locking device, but rather, they are meant to be used in conjunction with (ideally) a U-Lock. I work in a bike shop and attend school at Michigan State, a virtual candy store for bike thieves, and as such proper locking is imperative. First off, buy yourself a good U-Lock. I would recommend going with the Kryptonite brand, as they are THE name in bike locks. I myself use what Kryptonite calls the "Fahgettaboudit" which is an 18mm-thick, vinyl-coated monster that would make New York's most proficient bike thieves shudder. THIS IS WHAT YOU USE TO LOCK YOUR BIKE TO THE STATIONARY OBJECT, not the cable. Put the U-Lock through the frame and through the stationary object. You then use a cable (I reccommend a seven or four-foot KryptoFlex, again, for the same...

Great cable
I bought all three 525 (5mm x 2.5'), 1004 (10mm x 4') and 1007 (10mm x 7').Amazon seems to apply reviews of any of those products to all three products. So, be careful to understand which product a review applies to. For example, the 525 is a nice leash to keep your seat from walking away (while you step into a convenience store). But, it would take small wire cutters for a thief to cut. (Not a cable to use to keep your front wheel secure to a u-lock.).The 1004 and 1007 models, at 3/8" diameter, is thinner than Avenir's 1/2" (12mm) x 7' cable. And, more expensive than the Avenir. Obviously, a little lighter to carry. But, perhaps less of a deterrent. Even though we're only talking about 1/8" difference, 3/8" tends to be the limit of smaller (concealable/affordable) wire-rope cutters. Having a 1/2" diameter cable could slow down a thief using smaller wire-rope cutters. Or, make a thief using the correctly-sized cutters draw more attention to himself (cutters to...

Good length, very strong, easy to take with you.
I recently moved to Minneapolis (which is very bike-friendly) and work downtown. Biking to work is a pleasure and it is nice to have a little piece of mind about the storage of my bike. Also, I thought the cable would be inconvenient to carry, but it is not.. It can store easily in most bags that you would bike with, or around the handlebars or other parts of the bike. It has a little Velco strip that you can use to keep it looped up.I definitely think that a longer cable like this 7 footer is a good idea (as opposed to one of the shorter cables). Once you loop it up for storage, it doesn't take a lot of space, and it offers more flexibility when you lock your bike.

Protect your bike from theft wherever you roam with the Kryptonite Evo Mini 7 U-shaped bicycle lock. Equipped with a 4-foot KryptoFlex looped cable in addition to the lock itself, the Evo Mini 7 is an ideal choice for urban environments and college campuses. The lock's strength stems from the 13mm hardened Max-Performance steel shackle, which is designed to resist bolt cutters and leverage attacks. The shackle is 1.5 inches longer than previous incarnations, so you have plenty of room to wrap the cable around your front wheel and lock it securely. Cyclists will also love the innovative EZ-Mount transportation system, which fits on the adjustable spline and allows for multiple offset fitments to better align the lock for transportation.

The Evo Mini 7 boasts a 9 ranking on the Kryptonite 1-12 comparison system, which ranks the varying levels of security within the company's product range. A lock that ranks 1 on the Kryptonite scale might work if you live in the burbs and have a Rottweiler parked next to your bike or motorcycle. A 9, by contrast, isn't the toughest rating on the Kryptonite scale, but it's pretty darned close. Other security-enhancing features include a high-security Bent Foot design, a reinforced cuff over the hardened crossbar and cylinder that protects the disc-style cylinder; and a center keyway that defends against leverage attacks. As a bonus, the lock includes three stainless-steel keys, including one with a high-intensity LED bulb for convenient, easy unlocking in the dark. The lock measures 7 by 3.25 inches.

Good all round value
Where I live and commute (Brisbane, AU), most people with bikes pricier than mine (at least in public) use a cheap cable lock around only the frame or wheel (occasionally there'll be one that goes through both wheels and frame). Others might have a big U-lock around just the frame which looks like a combination of inconvenience and lower security. Perhaps also worth keeping in mind is the fact that decent bike racks in good locations are not as common as old dodgy racks so the lock might only be half the game.I didn't feel like pouring $30 towards a cable lock and locally, $60 can perhaps buy the Series 2 Std with cable; but at the US/AUD exchange rate in March 2011 the price of the Evo Mini-7 + cable hit a sweet spot in value and relative security.Like what other internet people say, the mounting bracket isn't great but it hasn't been working too badly either (it gets easier to use with a little practise). Because this is a mini 7" U-lock, it *does* fit neatly...

Great product
This is one of the best deals on Amazon. You get the industrial standard U-lock and a nice cable to lock up your front or back wheel. The Fuhggetaboutit u-lock (which we also purchased from Amazon) is higher-guage material, but for day-to-day use, I prefer this lock, as it's not nearly as heavy. You can also stuff it into your belt (ala Silverlake hipster) for easy transport. The key works just fine and there's a cover for the keyhole when not in use. All in all, a great product.

Pretty nice
My main reason to buy this one over the other kryptonite U-locks was that it included and cable to lock my front wheel. After getting it, I find myself just using the U-lock without the cable.Like other users said, the keys are kind of light weight. I didn't really believe it, but now I see what they mean. It feels like they're made of graphite or something because I'm always fearful they will break off in the lock. I am really gentle whenever I put them in just to make sure they don't break off. Quite literally, the keys alone are enough to give it 3 stars instead of 5. If I spend 30$ + on a bike lock, shouldn't it come with a decent set of keys make of something that feels more sturdy? I'm not a materials person. Maybe they're stronger, but just they feel flimsy.

Where Can I buy Kryptonite

I paid less than $[. ] for this lock on sale and for that kind of money a Kryptonite lock is a great deal. Before closing the U-Lock, put one end of the looped cable onto the U-Lock, then loop the cable through your wheel and seat supports. If you try to use this cable as your primary means of securing your bike (frame) then don’t be surprised if your bike gets stolen (like another reviewer experienced, sadly). Put the other end of the looped cable onto the U-Lock, close the U-Lock, and walk away whistling, because your bike is now un-stealable. It should NOT be used to secure the bike’s frame to a solid object like a bike rack.
