Not a bad game . . . but you might want to wait for the price to drop before buying.
The first KOTOR was, in my opinion, one of the greatest games ever. Though it had its flaws, they were few and far between. Obsidian and everyone involved with putting out KOTOR 2: TSL deserves an enthusiastic round of applause for their efforts to make a follow-up to such a stellar game. They managed to come up with a sequel that, while plauged with bugs and other issues, is nonetheless relatively enjoyable.First, the good stuff:TSL is fun to play--most of the time--and delivers much the same kind of experience as the first KOTOR (after all, what can compare to barbequing hordes of Sith with Force Storm whilst laughing maniaclly to yourself?). KOTOR 1 was good, and TSL tries to continue in the same tradition. Though there are plenty of problems with the game (see below), it is worth the time, to play through a few times. Many of the new features, like the streamlined weapon-change function, or the "Empty" label for looted containers, or the fact that new...

Might have been great, had they finished it
Knights of the Old Republic 2 is, in most ways, extraordinarily similar to the original. All the gameplay mechanisms are the same. There are a few new force powers, more feats to acquire, and more items and upgrades. This is not a criticism: the original KOTOR was a great game. This is not, for one simple reason: it isn't finished. By this, I don't mean that the door is left wide open for a sequel, although it is. I don't even mean that the game is buggy, although it is. The game is literally not finished.Plot points appear and disappear at random. For example, and without spoiling anything, in the first part of the game, your actions cause a significant problem on one of the other worlds in the game. You get a quest to fix the problem. You find a way to do so. The quest abruptly ends there--there is no way to let anyone know you've solved the problem. Then, at the end game, people complain to you that you never solved this quest. And that's a minor...

Disappointing
Knights of the Old Republic II is a good game. Maybe even a very good game. Which is a pity, because its prequel was one of the greatest games of all time. The sequel doesn't live up.The game mechanics are virtually identical to the original, which is fine. There are a few minor tweaks. The workbench can now be used to create items, not just upgrade them, and there's a new "lab station" that can make medical items and explosives. Both of these stations are much more common than the workbench was in the original. You can now switch among several "forms" which give bonuses to some attributes and penalties to others. Pazaak has been improved with the addition of some new cards, plus the first play alternates between the contestants. Other than that, there's not much in the engine that's new.Which, again, is fine. The original's mechanics worked well and there's no need to change them. But the original achieved legendary status by building a powerful and compelling...

The Sith Strike Back: Return of the Exile
A New RPGThe first Knights of the old Republic (KOTOR), was one heck of a game. It took everything that people loved about the classic trilogy and expanded universe of Star Wars, and packed it neatly into an epic RPG where everything you did had either light side or dark side properties. Sure there was light-saber combat, but the game was more about storyline and immersion than anything else. The countless hours of voice-acting and intriguing dialog choices, to say nothing of conversations that would or would not take place depending on what you did, created an experience that sent shock-waves through the video game world. Of course there were also some bugs to be found (okay, a LOT of bugs), and some of the mini games were pointless (anyone else get tired of playing gunner when it's almost impossible to lose?), but on the whole, that game was awesome, giving you everything from jedi mind-tricks and choking of smart-mouths with the force to dancing with twileks and finding...

Not quite KOTOR...
I loved KOTOR and couldn't get enough, so I bought KOTOR 2. It's a fine game, but can't match the epic scale of its predecessors. The biggest problem is bugs and what seems like an incomplete plot. Here are some thoughts:STORYKOTOR was renowned for its epic story. KOTOR 2's story by contrast is a bit vague and never really fulfills its potential. Basically, several Sith Lords are assassinating the Jedi and you have to gather the last of the Jedi masters. However, unlike in KOTOR, you barely see the main villains (well, except for one of the Sith...). The individual levels have some fun plots, particularly the civil wars, but some like Korriban seem empty. You see a surprisingly small number of Sith along the way. There are also a few potentially interesting plot twists, particularly the HK-50 droids, that seem unresolved. Indeed, there are developer files for further levels and cinematics that weren't included in the final game due to time pressures...

Absolutely Amazing!
I'd heard about the hype surrounding KOTOR for years. Yet, I never made the time to play it. Finally, when I upgraded my computer, I thought it was finally time to give the game a try. As a Star Wars fan, I couldn't have been happier. Here are a few key points:STORYThe game has a very rich story, far better than most of the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Your character is a Force-sensitive Republic soldier who leads an odd assortment of characters to locate an ancient superweapon controlled by the Sith. However, along the way you face dozens of side quests and have to make decisions in how you respond to challenges. You get to influence the story through your choices and can eventually head down the light or dark path. Thus, decisions have consequences - and it's not just the very final decision in the game, but innumerable small decisions when conversing with characters. I played through once, but it's clear that I could play the game again in its entirety and it...

Older games, but a comfortable collection
If you are like me and prefer to buy games that have been sitting on the shelf long enough for the initial excitement to wear off, the bugs to be fixed, and to know that the game is actually a good game or not, this is a package for you. This is two games in one. The Knights of the Old Republic (often called KOTOR on web pages) and Empires at War.Contrary to the comment made by the other reviewer, there is no major stability problem -- if you follow the package minimum requirements. The Macbook Intel GMA X3100 is explicitly not sufficient for KOTOR. It will however play Empires at War. Newer Macbooks use more advanced graphics cards and can play it fine. That isn't to say you will never experience a crash if you meet the requirements, but it was seldom enough that I was able to play it through a few times without having more than a couple crashes per playthrough.KOTOR supports extensive modding from the community, which can increase the replay...

Best *experience* I ever had in gaming
This is an awesome game. Period. In many ways, this game redefines the role playing genre. What is very unique about this game is that it has a very rich story. Probably one of the best Star Wars stories ever. This is the first game I have ever played where I simply kept going because I wanted to see what happens next. And I can guarantee you that there will be plot twists you will never be expecting! Also, the game features some of the most memorable game characters ever. Way to go, HK-47!The game also makes great use of character-shaping techniques. Are you going to evolve along the light side of the force, or is the dark side too tempting? Are you going to change your mind half way through? Many special abilities can be aquired, turning characters into very unique beings. And then of course, there is the choice of your party members: Do you want the strong wookie to help you out, or would you rather have a violent droid with you? Or perhaps a Jedi knight whom you just saved...

The Game is More Enjoyable Than Episodes 1 and 2
I had more fun playing Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic than I did watching the first two recent prequels at the theater. The story was more compelling and better yet, I had a chance to decide my Jedi's path. Simply put, this game is one of the best role-playing games for the PC in years. Now the game does use Dungeons and Dragons rules and it's not an action-based game. In other words, you will assign your character and his henchmen duties that they must perform in combat and watch the results (which are determined or prerolled by the computer) played out in front of you. It works similar to the popular D&D gaming series Baldur's Gate only with a more cinematic engine. (It's also made by the same people.) Also, don't expect to meet Luke Skywalker anytime soon as the events in this game take place at least a thousand years before the classic trilogy. Don't let that sway you from buying the game though because it has a fantastic story with its own classic heroes and...

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic takes place just a few years after the Mandolorian Wars, thousands of years before the events in the Star Wars movies we know and love. Two Jedi, master Revan and his apprentice Malak, led the Republic's forces to victory and pursued the Mandalorians into deep space only to return as Dark Jedi at the head of a huge fleet of Sith warships. Only the Force powers of the Jedi Bastila prevented the Sith from overwhelming the Republic's weakened forces. At the start of the game Malak has usurped control of the Sith by betraying Revan and has attacked the ship carrying Bastila and yourself. In true Star Wars style, the game begins with a bang.

The storyline could have been a standard coming-of-age yarn but is instead a genuinely interesting adventure told with humor, compassion, and respect for the source material. Your character has a mystical bond with Bastila, and the two of you share some kind of connection to the Sith villains Darth Malak and Darth Revan. The game's planet-hopping adventures are driven by your exploration of these connections and how they relate to your larger goal of discovering the source of the Sith's sudden fleet. During your adventure you can explore side quests minor (such as racing swoops or gambling) and major (such as uncovering the fascinating back stories of your companions). Star Wars fans will get a kick out of the rich lore introduced in the game, particularly the Tatooine storyline that reveals the origin and history of the Sand People.

Gameplay is an abbreviated form of Wizards of the Coast's d20 Star Wars RPG game system--anyone who has played Dungeons & Dragons will be familiar with the abilities, stats, feats, and bonuses in this game. The player creates a character as a member of one of three starting classes (soldier, smuggler, scout) and then later chooses a Jedi class (guardian, consular, sentinel). Joining the player's character are other Jedi, warriors, thieves, droids, a wookiee, and even a Mandolorian. Unlike the faceless non-player characters of other games, each member of the supporting cast has an intriguing history and even agenda. Up to two of these other characters can join your character at any time. Depending on who you chose to take with you, new dialogue and even intra-party arguments come into the game (put the Mandalorian veteran with the Republic patriot and you'll see sparks fly). Combat is real-time turn-based, meaning the turns are seamless but the player has the option of pausing the action at any time to issue orders or direct any character to use a certain Force power, ability, feat, or item.

Graphics range from adequate to exceptional. Building and character models are not impressive--about what you get in GTA 3. Lightsaber graphics and environmental effects (like waving grass, clouds, and weather) bring the world to life. Battles are just brilliant, with characters pumping out blaster fire at Jedi who dash, dodge, and even deflect the bolts back toward their assailants. Complete with sounds straight out of the movies, the thrilling combat is pure Star Wars.

All in all, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a masterpiece of Star Wars gaming. The pacing, balance of action and dialogue, clever puzzles and quests, and loving attention to detail have set the bar very high for role-playing games in general and Star Wars games in particular. Consider this a must-have game.--Mike Fehlauer

Pros:

  • Captivating storyline
  • Clever dialogue
  • Star Wars feel
  • True story and dialogue support for either Light Side or Dark Side play
  • Brilliant combat graphics
  • Fascinating characters (the loyal--and homicidal--droid HK-47 is truly unique)
Cons:
  • Occasional bugs in dialogue, movie playback
  • Cannot transfer equipped gear between characters while on your ship

It's been a long time coming.
It has been a long and interesting ride with the Star Wars gaming license, with about as many games as there is sand on Tatooine. The latest offerings come in the form of a role playing game- Knights of the Old Republic. Knights is a somewhat confined and well-executed romp through perhaps the greatest franchise ever created. Games magazines are giving Knights high marks, and its well deserved, because she immersiveness of the game rivals just about every other Star Wars title from LucasArts or its stable of developers.Knights succeeds in just about every category- it is both stunning to behold and fun to play. Characters are well designed, if a little `same-ish' given that all men and women are the same height, with only superficial variances in model types. The game utilizes a bare-bones version of 3rd Edition D&D at its core, but unlike Neverwinter Nights, KOTOR only uses the system as background support and the mechanics rarely if ever intrude into actual game play. What...

Damn...this is good
After only playing for 4 hours, I was totally taken in by this game. Star Wars fan or not, this game should please any XBOX owner. The story line is deep, so deep that you can be overhelmed by the amount of choices you have. The environments are stunning. The NPC's are a blast to talk to. There is so much to do in this game even in the first hour. The learing curve is a little steep. I found that the turn based combat takes some getting use to. If you like the run in and shoot people kind of game, you may want to rent this first to see if you like the combat. Its based on D&D rules, +1, -2, hit miss stuff. I'm learning and its alot of fun.You start off with a basic long blade. You have to work and spend time to become a Jedi and build a lightsaber. How long? I don't know. I can tell you that so far I've robbed some apartments, killed some people that had bounties on them, met a female Sith Solider at a bar. She invited my to a party where they proceeded to get...

FANTA-freakin-TASTIC!!! BUY THIS GAME!!!
Star Wars at its best!Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) is the best RPG you will find on your Xbox, PLUS it probaly is one of the best games around on the Microsoft Console.Story: 10 out of 10.Absolutely awesome. KOTOR is well scripted, has great plot twists and gives you the possibility of roaming both sides of the power in the best way any Star Wars game ever did. Forget Jedi Knights, if you liked that game, you will LOVE this game.Furthermore, KOTOR is the best thing that happened to the Star Wars franchise since "The Empire Strikes Back." In my humble opinion, this game would have been a great movie and is BY FAR a better movie than the last two we have seen at the theatre.Graphics: 10 out of 10.Yo-hoo, go along in this awesome graphics bonanza. The Star Wars universe is wonderfully recreated in many of its aspects. Cities are wonderful to visit and explore, character skins and movements are close to perfection. KOTOR, from somebody whos played it
For all you people that wasted your time telling others what its gonna be like, I will tell you what it is like. Ive played it, and I'll tell you this, its really fun, with all sorts of battles and lightsaber duels, ect. 9 out of 10 for gameplay, because it can get sort of hard sometimes. I'm not complaining though, and you wouldn't either after you beat Halo on legendary w and w/o co-op. Anyway, the sound is pretty good if you like star wars music. Graphics are really good, 11 out of 10. The game is look really realistic. To top it off you get to choose and customize your character, pick wether you want to be jedi or sith, customize your saber hilt, pick what color you want, and even pick what type, single blade, double blade, or one blade in each hand. The control system is ingenious. If you like real time games like star wars jedi knight jedi outcast you can pick to do it in real time. If you like traditional rpgs, like final fantasy series, you can do it to. And you can...

XD I would never actually buy this game though, for it’s not worth the money to play only a small portion of the game that’s basically just a rip-off of the Dance Central games. It fails to deliver a good story like other Star Wars games, it fails to deliver quality voice acting, and it fails at it’s core element of being a Kinect game. Heck, I wouldn’t even mind renting the game just to try the dancing portion of this game. So while this game looks interesting, the game itself fails. “DARTH ANGRYJOE SITH SYMBOL OF RAGE & ANGER” LONG LIVE THE MASTER OF RAGE THAT FILLS ALL SITH & DARK/ROUGE JEDI & ALL WHO CLAIM TO BE ON THE SIDE OF THE SITH & BEAR IT’S NAME WITH FULL AWARENESS OF WHAT IT FUCKING MEANS TO BEAR ANY GODDAMN... ” as I fucking execute each & every shithead behind this garbage with my 4 blade (Bow Styled) Lightsaber with a red & black saber blade on the top & a red & black saber blade on the bottom. ” But I would say to each & every fool behind this piece of shit people called a “Video Game” “You are an abomination to both the the light & dark side. There are many other Pod Racing and other racing games to pick up so one shouldn’t waste money on this. It’s fun and all, hell it’s the best part, but it can’t carry the whole game since it is just a clone of Dance Central. Playing the Dance Central games was the only time I’ve ever had any fun on a Kinect. It doesn’t really surprise me too much that the dancing portion of this game is the best part. It is a big slap in the face for hardcore fans, but dancing games is what the Kinect does best.
