Unusual Plant
The plant's leaves comes in 2 or 3 colors and the seeds are marked either black, red or green. you can basically watch this plant grow from a seed in the spring to well over 12 feet tall at the end of the summer. this is the second year we have used this plant and have discovered that it re-seeds itself. the seeds fall from the blooms and lay dormant during the winter (and our winter was one of the worst in recent memory) and this spring there are perhaps 8 seedlings coming up aside from the ones we germinated in the greenhouse.

Good Deal
These seed worked great for me, I live in the Philadelphia area; most were planted in a cluster (partial sun) and got about 7' tall, another planted in full sun next to my compost easily reached 14' with 3' bronzy leaves.

Product Description

In frost-free areas, castor bean is an evergreen herbaceous or semi-woody large shrub or small tree that gets up to 40' tall and 15' wide. In the tropics, it can have a trunk that is woody near the base and up to a foot in diameter. Elsewhere, castor bean plant grows as an annual that can get 4-15' tall in a single growing season. This is a fast growing, suckering, colony forming plant with decidedly tropical looking foliage. They tend to grow straight up at first, developing branches only later in the season (and in subsequent years for plants that live that long). The huge leaves are palmate, with 5-11 deeply incised lobes. They are glossy purplish or reddish-green and 12-30" across, with long petioles (leaf stems). The stems are watery juicy and reddish or purplish too. The flowers are followed by reddish brown egg-shaped capsules, about an inch long, thickly covered with soft flexible spines.

Ricunus communis sanguineus (Sanguineus Castor Bean)

Notable features:
The large, luxuriant, red-tinged leaves of this Castor Bean are effective as a focal point or backdrop and instantly add tropical flare to any garden. Best treated as an annual.

Most Amazing plant I have ever grown.
Thanks to HIRTS. I've grown regular castor bean plants for years. In 2009 I ordered Zanzibar castor seeds from HIRTS. I soon learned this type of castor is the giant of giants! It is now dec 15 2009...and they are at least 20 feet high! Two of my 8 are now towering above the roof of my ranch style home. The winter frost has killed a few of the tire sized leaves, but the plants just easily replace them. They are full of huge bean pods! Every time I stand among them I feel transported to a Hollywood set for the Jurassic Park movies. They look so unreal, so strange and otherworldly! On my little side street I actually see people stop their cars just to stare at them. I used no fertilizer or plant food on them, and now they are so gargantuan I laugh out loud just looking at them. I love them like pets, and if it doesn't rain for five days straight I hose my babies down for an hour of so. I know as the temperatures continue to dip I will wake up one morning and see my friends killed...

Zanzibar Shade
A week after I received and planed the seeds all eleven had sprouted... Two weeks later I transplanted them to my yard. At five weeks all eleven of the plants are over a foot tall. I live in Orlando, Florida and I wanted some shade along the southwest section of my home, and I needed a plant that would not crash through my roof during a hurricane; these appear as if they will help keep down the internal temperature of my home, while looking very jurassic cool:)

Fast,and bright
I bought these seeds, and planted them the day they arrived. They are a very fast growing plant, much faster than I anticipated. Very nice colors, all in all, a great plant.

Product Description

THE CASTOR BEAN is a shrub-like plant with large, long-stemmed leaves that are lobed like fingers. Its spiny, clustered seed pods contain white, bean-like seeds (Botanically speaking, it isn't a true bean, but a Spurge), which typically bear attractive markings in various colours. The plant is native to tropical Africa, but it is grown commercially in California and has become naturalized throughout the southern United States. In northern areas, it is often cultivated, in the warmer months, as an ornamental annual in gardens, providing local gardeners with a castor of thousands....

Giant Zanzibar is a larger variety than common castor bean with more conspicuous veining on the leaves. This is a fast growing plant with huge, palmate, tropical-looking leaves up to three feet across. In tropical areas Castor Beans are perennial. This variety can grow 20 feet tall.

POISON LOCATION: Seeds, bark & leaves are all somewhat toxic, but the greatest concentration of the toxin occurs in the seeds & their pods. If you grow Castor Beans in your garden and you have children it is safest to remove & destroy the seed pods before they mature.
POISON TYPE: Ricin, a poisonous protein, one of a group known as plant lectins. In the right amount & concentration, Ricin is said to be one of the most toxic natural poisons in the world. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of more complex proteins in the intestinal wall, which in turn causes digestive distress. Castor Beans are traditionally cultivated as a basis of laxatives such as castor oil, which is also used as an ingredient of industrial lubricants, soaps, & varnishes

    Good mistake
I purchased the red Leaf seeds, however I was sent the pink flowering caster bean seeds. I was dissapointed at first until I noticed the beatiful pink flowers on the caster bean plant. I beleive it was an honest mistake by the seller. No harm done.

    Red Leaf Castor Bean Seeds
This was shipped to me very fast and nicely. I planted them 3 weeks ago and only a few have just started to break ground. I soaked the seed over night as suggested on another site on how to grow these. So was surprised it took so long for them to sprout. Just hoping they continue to grow. So I'm still waiting to see what happens.

    They sprouted!
Delivery was fast. Immediately planted in pots. Past experience with castor bean seeds is about 50% germination/failure of seedling to thrive of seeds I saved from previous year. So far only 6 out of 24 of these seeds have not germinated or failed to thrive.I use castor plants to create shade for plants that cannot tolerate full sun and also todeter moles from digging in the garden.

Where Can I buy Castor Beans

I’ve grown regular castor bean plants for years. BTW…I ordered various types of seeds and live plants from HIRTS this year for the first time…they really really are doing great (I think my Echiums are going to explode in 2010. In 2009 I ordered Zanzibar castor seeds from HIRTS. I soon learned this type of castor is the giant of giants. I’ve read online accounts of people is MS and FL growing the same plants for years…tucked in my heart is the little hope that my SC climate is at least as conducive.

Planting bush beans with potatoes in alternating rows protects the spuds from the Colorado potato beetle and the beans from the Mexican bean beetle. Repel moles around a vegetable garden with a border of castor beans. Onions repel rabbits and can be inter-planted with peas, beans, lettuce and cabbage. however, there are a few easy things you can do in your own garden right now to make use of this intriguing method of gardening. If your garden attracts raccoons, plant corn and pumpkins together so that the large pumpkin leaves grow around the base of the corn stalks. Beans and potatoes work in concert for organic pest control. Order ladybugs in bulk online or buy them from gardening centers. Remember that companion planting for pest control includes keeping those cute little rabbits out of the garden. Plant them with lettuce to repel earth flies that hate the smell of lettuce and make them take flight. Protect carrots by planting them with leeks to repel both carrot and onion flies.  Companion planting for chemical free pesticides and organic sustainability is a huge subject that can take years to master.

Next came a large squirrel–proof bird feeder with a spring–loaded platform that closed the feeding portals when squirrels sat on the perch. On contrary, I always admired it — from afar, that is. Here in Columbia, I decided that it was about time to get closer to nature: plant trees and bushes, make flowerbeds and put up bird feeders. One morning I looked out the window and saw a large raccoon clinging to the bird feeder upside down, eating seeds without even touching the platform.
