Good Game
We enjoy all the history mixed in with this game. The kids have to really think and plan; challenging and not too violent.

Making History
Solid game. I have played the series ever since the first Age of Empires came out. The game has evolved and this game attempted to add a little role playing elements to the strategy. I was very happy with the overall content, options, and scenarios. These games have always been interesting to me since they offer a glimpse into history. Sure they are not the actual history, but it is fun playing through your what if? scenarios. My young son has really caught on to the series also and enjoys it. At the end of the day, it makes for some interesting dinner conversations about history, the importance of a strong economy, defending your territoy and expanding it to sustain your population growth. Bottomline, this is a great opportunity to learn/teach your kids about history and small elements of culture and society in a very fun way. best of all, its on their terms. If you are just out to have fun and be a total tyrant, you can do that to. i love this series.

Love it, Love it.
Great graphics and endless ways to play as well as several difficulty levels. If I had not downloaded the latest updates, the game would have lost a star: It originally required the cd be in the computer to run. The latest updates cleared that up, and the game rocks!! It is as easy or hard as you like and the interface is superb.

It's the dawn of a new age in real-time strategy (RTS) games. A brave New World is rising--a hostile yet beautiful world, filled with innovative gameplay, new strategic scenarios, eye-searing graphics and much more. Welcome to a world called Age of Empires III.

Campaign
In this action adventure tale of historical fiction, players take on the role of Morgan Black and his family, struggling against the hostile wilderness and a mysterious cult that's crept in from Europe.

In a series of 24 scenarios divided into three acts, Morgan Black and his descendants help the Aztecs resist conquest by Spanish conquistadors, pit the French against the British in the French and Indian War and help Simon Bolivar lead revolutions in South America.

Multiplayer
Whether you're searching for a quick game or hoping to talk strategy with friends online, Age of Empires III's Multiplayer site is your community destination.

Here, you can play with persistent Home Cities that gain power and strategic options the more games you play, compete for a spot on dozens of ladders, help organize your clan or chat after a game -- all without leaving the multiplayer portal.

Fans of Age of Mythology's Quick Search can still look for games swiftly, while players looking for something specific can browse game lists to find the set of options that matches their tastes.

New Feature--Home Cities
?This revolutionary new feature to the RTS landscape is incorporated into all aspects of Age of Empires III -- from Campaign to Multiplayer -- and is unlike anything you've experienced before.

Much like the persistent character from a role-playing game that encourages you to keep playing, your Home City is an important support system to your efforts in the New World. During a game, your Home City can regularly send you supplies or military reinforcements.

You are the leader of your colony, but your success brings glory back to Mother Europe. The more games you play, and the better you do, the more powerful your Home City will become. Every few games, you gain the ability to both upgrade and customize your Home City:

  • Upgrade your city by unlocking new types of soldiers or buildings, or improving those you already have.
  • Broaden your tech tree in whatever direction most fits your play style--invest in warships, native alliances, cavalry, artillery or economy.
  • Customize your Home City by changing the appearance of buildings, the weather or even the types of people who walk, work and perform in its streets.
  • Throughout a game, as well as in between games, you can visit your Home City to watch its citizens go about their lives, get an opinion on how you're doing, plot your next move or just marvel at the beautiful sunset.

Full 3-D Graphics, Destructible Environments and More
?We first set out to reproduce the rich detail of Age of Empires II: Age of Kings. As we strove to make the fascinating Age of Empires III time period come alive, that goal quickly evolved: We at Ensemble Studios wanted to create the best-looking game ever. From the stunning water effects to the hundreds of units battling on-screen, you'll feel like you're a part of the action in the New World.

  • Tone mapping--This photo imaging technique balances the colors in a scene on the fly. The end result is a rich, warm game where bright colors are vibrantly rendered alongside darker counterparts, such as shadows.
  • Lighting and shadows--The sun is always shining in Age of Empires, so it's important that lighting and shadows be an awe-inspiring experience. Units and buildings cast shadows according to a real sun position, and even cast shadows on each other. High Dynamic Range rendering allows us to represent the shiny glints of sunlight that bounce off highly reflective surfaces.
  • Bump and specular mapping--Water glistens like water. Metal shines like metal. These advanced techniques serve to provide an extra level of rendering detail heretofore unseen in real-time strategy (RTS) gaming.
  • Water--We felt that portraying stunning, realistic water effects in the game was so important that we devoted a programmer to it full-time. You'll find the water rich with details like foam near the shore, accurately modeled water motion, flotsam in rivers and realistic water colors. Plus, reflections change with the viewing angle, the angle of sunlight and the motion of the water. The overall effect is breathtaking.
  • Cliffs and Riverbeds--Instead of just stretching terrain, we built a system to attach geometry to the terrain map to allow for realistic overhangs and steep cliffs, from areas like the American Southwest. This effect is supported on random maps too.

Civilizations

British
Quick access to Settlers gives the British one of the strongest economies in the game. The ability to upgrade two key units -- the Musketeer and Hussar -- make the British military formidable in the late game. The British Home City emphasizes improvements to technology and naval warfare.
Dutch
Although Dutch Settlers are limited and costly, their civilization makes up for this economic disadvantage by building Banks and generating coin automatically. The Dutch Home City emphasizes upgrades to defense and economy.
French
Although the French economy starts slowly, the Coureur unit, a Villager with strong fighting skills, makes the French difficult to attack early. The French also have the strongest cavalry unit in the game -- the Cuirassier. Plus, the French are experts at allying with the Native Americans.
German
The Germans have fewer Settlers and therefore a slower economy. Fortunately, both the Settler Wagon and Uhlan cavalry spawn for free from the German Town Center. Plus, the Germans start with the ability to send Mercenaries from their Home City (long before other civilizations can).
Native American
European civilizations can learn new technologies and gain troops by forging alliances with the Native Americans. A British player who allies with the Iroquois is essentially playing as two civilizations: the British and the Iroquois.
Ottoman
For the Ottomans, Settlers spawn automatically from the Town Center. Building a Mosque and conducting research help keep that Settler production steady. Befitting their position straddling Europe and Asia, the Ottomans have more unique units than any other civilization.
Portuguese
Starting the game with two Town Centers, the Portuguese can quickly produce Settlers, control territory or support their allies. The Spyglass ability allows the Portuguese to easily spy on the enemy. The Portuguese also have a strong navy, strong light infantry and the best Dragoons in the game.
Russian
Starting the game with extra resources but fewer Settlers gives the Russians the flexibility of focusing on economy or an early raid. Russian infantry, individually weak, are trained in blocks at a faster rate, providing the Russians with the opportunity to overwhelm their enemy with greater numbers.
Spanish
The Spanish have a strong military, with both hand infantry and cavalry. Flexibility in early shipments from the Home City give the Spanish the option to attack early or set up for a strong, late economy. Spanish Home City improvements benefit soldiers, buildings and naval units.

Combat
Age of Empires III gives players an amazing amount of control over their side of the battlefield. ?

  • More to command -- Not only are you in command of large and diverse armies of infantry, cavalry and artillery, but also Native American warriors, mercenaries and tall ships.
  • Multiple formations -- You can assign different formations to your army for different strengths and weaknesses, or have the game automatically choose the most appropriate formation. Examples include:
    • Volley -- ranged infantry, like musketeers, take turns firing at enemies ahead of them.
    • Charge -- your soldiers walk, then run into combat. Cavalry wield sabers, and musketeers fix bayonets. This formation does tremendous damage but makes your soldiers more prone to injury.
    • Bombard -- your soldiers protect the cannons, while the cannons shell enemy ranks. Available only when you have artillery in your army.
    • Battles are easier to follow -- You can still command individual units. But when the units fight in formation, you'll be able to tell exactly who is winning the fight.
  • Real-time physics -- Infantry struck by cannon fire will be thrown like rag dolls, perhaps even over a cliff and into the water. Cannonballs bounce and ricochet.
  • Detailed destructions -- Shingles, shutters and whole towers may fly off a building and interact with the terrain, such as crashing into nearby water. This next generation effect is done on the fly so that each building always has a unique destruction, no matter how many times you see it.
  • Unique animations -- With hundreds of unique combat animations, you'll never see the same battle twice.

A successful installment in the Age of Empires Saga
When I sat down with Age of Empires 3 I was hoping for a little more - something new and refreshingly different (ala the Lord of the Rings RTS for example). There is a new feature, the Home City. The rest of Age of Empires 3 is the same as the previous games at heart, with some new makeup and some new units. Don't get me wrong, this new Age of Empires installment is fun and just as addictive as its predecessors, but also feels tired at the same time. If you still enjoy the previous Age of Empires games, you will likely enjoy this one equally. It has been some time since I played the previous Age of Empires 2 but I remembered a simple, relatively clean interface. In Age of Empires 3 I was a little taken aback by the clutter of information, and juggling Home City shipments (and Deck Building) with what was happening on screen requires a lot of micro-management.This new installment has some great civilizations and in this regard, the units are new and...

Lackluster, but not without potential
I agree with the other reviews citing this as being something of a letdown at first glance.Edit for graphical update:I originally found the graphics on this game to be lackluster. My system couldn't run it in remotely full detail and still be playable, so my game didn't look anything like the screenshots. So I did what any good gamer would do: bought a new system. Incredibly, even on a brand new fully speced out Alienware system with AMD 4000+ 64-bit processor, 2 gigs of RAM, and dual video cards (SLI, PCI Express) I *still* couldn't run the game in high resolution, high detail. It looks pretty but it chops when I try to scroll the screen. I think something is just plain broken with this game. Other games run awesome on the new system, but not this game. Conclusion: you will never, ever play this game with it looking as good as it does on the screenshots. Yes, those are some mighty pretty trees but it's not going to be as pretty when you adjust down...

Good enough, but I expected more after six years
If you have never played any of the Age of Empires games before, then AOE 3 will probably seem pretty nifty. Judged strictly on its own merits, there isn't particularly anything wrong with the game in and of itself. However, there isn't much here that we haven't seen before. We waited six years, and this is the best they could do, apparently. The graphics are very nice. However, is that enough to sustain one's interest. As other reviewers have noted, the combat quickly disintegrates into a disorganized slugfest, which really makes no sense to me. "Rise of Nations" certainly managed to provide combat sequences that were reasonably organized. It is frustrating to spend money on what are presumably well-trained troops, only to see them break ranks at the first hint of combat. The naval combat is a joke --- two ships firing broadsides at each other, with no attempts at maneuver. Anyone who has played "Port Royale" will know that one can expect better than this...

Very Fun... But Doesn't Last
For some reason, I never had my expectations set very high when it came to this game, and so, I held out on buying it until recently, when I noticed I could get this complete collection at such a great price. Perhaps it was because of the industrialization- something I detest whenever it somehow sneaks into a fantasy RPG which I often play. Maybe it was just because the formula for the Age series was already done, done again, then done again after that. Or most likely, I have always been terrible at real-time strategy games and found them frustrating, but fun at the same time. I guess I wanted something new, but still wanted something I knew I'd have fun with. And I did get that. When I first started, I was very pleased at a lot of the new features that added more depth to the Age series' formula. The game is largely played in the same way as previous Age games, but with more depth and strategy. While a lot tend to compare it to Age of Empires 2, this game has most in...

Enjoyable but AoE2 is more fun
This collection of the basic game and expansions is a good value for Real Time Strategy (RTS) game players. The War Chiefs expansion is ok, campaign short, and not a lot of depth. The Asian Dynasties Expansion is a lot of fun, three campaigns (Japan, India, China), with each nation having their own wonders giving them unique special abilities. The different nations are neat, but not having a United States colonial civilization to choose from in skirmish mode is disappointing, especially after playing the campaign game in War Chiefs. The campaigns are easier to complete and have less depth than Age of Empires II (AoE2). AoE3 campaigns were overall fun, but require much less strategy to win; build one small army to defend your base and when the large army is ready to go, overwhelm the computer. The graphics have improved, but did experienced significant lag and even game freezing at times due to ship combat on the duo-core Thinkpad, even with all graphic options reduced...

One of the best RTS of all time
This game is simply amazing!! and to add all the expansions to the game itself just makes it that much better! The graphics for one is still up to par and its 2010! even when the cannons shoot there is realistic smoke comming out. The gameplay is very smooth on and offline! you dont have to have an internet connection to play this game in single player and its sad to say that many games now including starcraft 2 has to have an internet connection to be able to play it. The campaign is long especially with all the expansions The sound is great The online mode is simply flawless, i have been deployed in afghanistan and we have really slow internet, and to say that it runs smooth is just awesome! we have tried many other games online but sadly they do not run no were near as smooth. There is also lan for those of you who want to lan with buddies and play many at once. It is constantly being updated and patched so the game cannot recieve anything...

The Age of Empires Re-Boot
The current release of `Age of Empires Online' (AOE Online) is a distant shadow of a once stellar gaming platform. That being said, here's to the hope that future patch releases will implement many of the items which should have been in the 2011 game at its original August release. A brief history of the AOE franchise up to and including the new AOE Online release follows:The 'Age Of' History [AOE]:Original Developer: Ensemble Studios [ES] with AOE I originally released in 1997The original game components of both the AOE I and AOE II series (both 2D games) were based upon Real Time Strategy (RTS) game play for both individual and team play with games ranging from 1v1 players to 4v4 players. Multiple player games could be played with teams (i.e. friends) or random players with a variety of settings from which to choose. At the release of AOE I, Ensemble Studios hoped that it could eventually cover a significant expanse of human history through four...

Appeals to a Wider Audience...
Age of Empires Online appeals to a broader spectrum of gamers than the previous AOE releases. In fact, this game will probably be a disappointment to RTS purists. However, it will have a greater appeal to people who liked the building aspect of AOE (and other RTS games) but didn't like doing all that work for an hour of gameplay. It's like Madden NFL players going through the draft, training camp, and preseason every time they want to play one football game. Age of Empires Online introduces "Franchise Mode" to RTS gaming.MMO ASPECTSYou start with a home city. It's not very useful at first, but you can use it to produce crafting materials, special items to upgrade your units/buildings, assign "advisors" for each age, and decorate with your own personal touch. You also do quests. As with most MMO games, the first few levels of quests serve as a tutorial. Experience RTS gamers will find this exceedingly easy. I would recommend doing them on Elite...

Launch flaws fixed, much more features and game-modes
I have always been a huge fan of the AoE series since my younger years. While the basic familiar gameplay remained and the graphics were polished, I initially gave it 3-stars when this game first launched, for lack of features and a rough leveling grind. The latest patch (3/27/12) has addressed a lot of those complaints and balance issues, and they have since then released "Booster packs" to make the overall gameplay much more fun. The "Skirmish pack" was released and allows you to play with friends in a fully customizable game mode which was more like the old days. Along with an Arena mode for PvP, and the "Crete booster" for wave-based fighting, all of which is your choice single player or co-op, this game has jumped up to 4.5 stars in my book. Four civilizations to choose from now instead of the two available at launch is also a plus. The prices for all this content has dropped steeply compared to what it was at launch. You can unlock almost the entire game now for about...

THE EXPANSION THAT MAKES Age Of Empires 3 TRULY SHINE!
This is a solid expansion to the AGE OF EMPIRES III, the one you will play for hours at end. Although the 3rd installment of AoE was the weakest of the series (I personally enjoyed much more AGE OF EMPIRES II), I have to admit that I was really pleased by this expansion - and cannot complain but about minor things. After the lukewarm WARCHIEFS, which introduced Native American civilizations, this expansion introduces three major Asian civilizations (Japanese, Chinese, and Indian) - with their corresponding campaigns. The Japanese campaign takes place during the Shogunate civil wars. The Chinese campaign (trying to avoid any...political shoals) is on the fictional discovery of the New World by the Chinese (I would have preferred it to be about the unification of China under the Qin dynasty - but, then again, that would make it quite similar to the Japanese campaign). Finally, the Indian campaign is centered on the uprooting of the British East-India Trading...

Newer maps, more experience cards, and more fun
This expansion pack adds extra challenges with newer maps like the Silk Road map which allows for capturing trading posts instead of building them and further adding the option for a "monopoly win" of the routes. Other maps have treasures and guardians in the sea as well as on land. You can now earn up to having 25 experience cards in a deck as you progress in experience and they have done away with that lame customization of a home city which never made much sense. The experience cards for the new civilizations are also more diverse and innovative than the standard ones in Age III. For loyal players of the series you may get a sense that Age of Mythology was the influence for many of the new features, and a happy marriage at that.

Asian dynasties - A sweet addition
Well i dont want to spoil anyone by giving out too many details about China, India and Japan. ill just say that 3 new nations are unique, fun and easy to play with. All have specific only to them cards, wonders, military units. The artists at Big Huge Games did a great job of capturing the unique building structures for the new factions too. They all share similar economic tree but have elemets that distinct them like Japan can't hunt but has Cherry Orchard, and its houses serve as shrines that attract wild animals and generate 3 different resources one ata time. India cant kill cows from lifestock but uses them to gather Export, a new resource which you can spend to buy some units from Consulate where you ally with European nations. Each new side has own strategy it can implement. India relies heavily on Elephants, China on its Banner Army. The Best Games for the Best Price! A Must-Buy!
First of all, I would just like to say that this is such a good deal. I mean, ten dollars for the first two games AND both of their expansion packs? You can get "Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings Gold Edition" with its expansion "The Conquerors" for 20 dollars, or get this set, which includes all that AND the original Age of Empires with the "Rise of Rome" expansion for ten dollars less! Think about it. Ten less dollars for much more? Its a miracle in the form of a computer game set if you ask me. Ah, on to the games themselves.Age of Empires:A true classic, this game has to be one of the most fun games ever put out. Though the graphics are nothing dazzling, who cares? I have spent endless hours on this game, and beaten every campaign in it. If you don't want to play a full campaign, the random map games are equally as fun! The replay value of this game is also amazing. It seems more fun every time you play it, and its impossible to get sick of! The only part...

High End Users Beware!
First of all I give this collection five stars in the FUN rating because I love Age of Empires, I have since I started using a computer way back in '97. My two star rating goes for this collection because I haven't been able to get it to play yet on my High End machine.High End Users beware of this one. If you've got XP, you'll likely run into the same problem I've had. "Cannot initialize graphics" error. I've done what they've suggested in the FAQ and on the Microsoft Support, but no go so far. It says to reset the display resolution to 800x600 and set compatability to 256 color mode, but so far no luck for some reason. I'm runnig a Radeon 9800 on an Athlon 2600+ and XPPro SP2.The game is great, but keep these problems in mind. It says XP on the box too, but don't be too hopeful that it will work on the first try, you may have to do some tweaking to get it to work at all if you're on a high-end PC. Just keep that in mind and be smart, it's a great deal for...
